Neil Young vs. Lynyrd Skynyrd

Here is what could be regarded as the granddaddy of all rock feuds. For a Canadian, folk rocker Neil Young was pretty interested in the American South and did not exactly paint a rosy picture of it on songs like 1970's "Southern Man" and 1972's ... more"Alabama", calling up the history of slavery and racism. Skynyrd responded on their 1974 classic "Sweet Home Alabama" by singing, "Well I heard Mr. Young talk about her / I heard old Neil put her down / Well, I hope Neil Young will remember / Southern Man don't need him around anyhow." Nothing subtle there. Or is there? By all accounts, Young and the members of Skynyrd were mutual admirers and Skynyrd front man Ronnie Van Zant often wore Neil Young t-shirts on stage in concert. Sometimes a song is just a song.
