The pressure is getting to the Rockers.
After last week's elimination show, they return to a Mansion that
feels just a little bit emptier. "There are shockingly few people"
there these days Jordis says, and "no one
wants to go home." So the after-show meal becomes an occasion for
blowing off some steam. Jessica is toasted in
absentia, and J.D. fashions a miniature
chair for her, so she'll always have a place at the table. (Or maybe
not. It falls almost immediately to the floor, much to his
amusement.) Suzie has a chance to see
the last performance that got her in the bottom three when the
Rockers are given Verizon V-Cast phones so they can watch
themselves. After checking herself out, Suzie still thinks her
performance was strong. "It's frustrating," she says and to blow off
some steam, she decides it's time to get drunk. And drunk she gets,
a condition J.D. calls "a show in itself," one that includes a
venerated rock star tradition -- the table dance. Because it's
impolite to let someone drink alone, the rest of the Rockers join
in.
With the revelry in full swing, Dave walks into the
Mansion and, for possibly the first time in recorded history, the
arrival of a rock star puts a damper on a party. Everyone sobers up
pretty quickly as he brings news of this week's clinic. He tells the
Rockers that "INXS is looking for
someone who can contribute creatively," so this week, the Rockers
have to write an original song. They can write it alone or they can
collaborate, but the Rockers are responsible for their own song.
The Rockers reacts to the news in their own fashion. Deanna worries that she
"lacks the chops" to write a song and is sure she'll have to find a
collaborator -- she starts working with Ty. Jordis is "terrified."
She thinks she has "something to offer" as a songwriter but worries
she's not in the same league as some of the other Rockers. J.D. goes
off into a corner and gets to work -- alone. Marty sees it as a
challenge from INXS; whereas MiG, fresh off the high of
getting the encore, views it as an "amazing opportunity." Ty and
Suzie are on similar wavelengths. Suzie says that having to write
their own songs will "expose" people, Ty compares it with people
getting "wet and naked," and out of all the Rockers, he is the "best
wet and naked" (we'll just have to take his word for it). One
thing's for sure, this could turn the Mansion upside down, with
people who have never had to worry now in jeopardy.
In the midst of all this, MiG is a little disappointed with his
encore reward -- a phone call from his wife in London. He's sure
she's going to show up at the Mansion and knows she's hiding
somewhere. Talking on the phone, he tells her he "looked behind
every wall," but, obviously, he didn't check the stairways, because
she climbs up one behind him and taps him on the shoulder. The smile
on MiG's face is more eloquent than words.
The next morning, INXS has a promotional appearance at Star 98.7
FM. Accompanying them are J.D. and Suzie, who get the honor because
their names were picked out of a hat. Suzie can't believe her luck;
she gets to sing an INXS song backed by INXS without being in the
bottom three.
When they return to the Mansion, they find that everyone is up
and working on their songs, giving the Mansion what Marty calls an
atmosphere of "mad creativity." This week, it's Suzie who discovers
the songs and sees the twist INXS has planned for them. Not everyone
will be performing their original song -- only two of the Rockers
will get that chance. The other five will sing some of the biggest,
most crowd-pleasing songs ever written. No matter how good they
think their song is, do any Rockers have the confidence to put an
original song up against The Rolling Stones' "Start Me Up" or Aerosmith's "Dream On"?
Given the high stakes involved, no one can quite figure out how
to divvy up this week's tunes. Only Deanna is hesitant about
performing her original composition, so Suzie proposes they draw
names out of a hat. It worked for her once, why shouldn't it again?
This time, the gamble doesn't pay off, as MiG and Deanna's names are
chosen. Jordis is disappointed she won't get to sing her song but
feels the song she has, "Dream On," is more than enough
compensation. "It doesn't get any better than that," she says.
Suzie, on the other hand, is getting more and more worked up. She's
almost obsessed, convinced that the only way she can remain in the
competition is by singing her own song -- even though she has "the
chance of bombing." She's not sure what to do and finally sits down
with MiG and Deanna. We haven't seen Suzie cry for a few weeks, but
now, the floodgates are open. She's sobbing, pleading with one of
them to trade with her and let her do the song she wrote for INXS.
After she runs from the room, MiG and Deanna discuss Suzie's
proposal. Deanna, with MiG egging her on, rejects it out of hand.
MiG's not so sure. He can see how important this is for Suzie. Marty
reminds him that INXS told him to fight for the songs he wants to
do, and if he's not going to fight for one of his own songs, when
will he? In another room, J.D. advises Suzie. He asks her: "Do you
think your song is stronger than 'Start Me Up'?"
In rehearsal, the two Rockers performing original songs have the
nerve-wracking experience of showing the tunes to the House Band's Paul and Jim.
Deanna's number, "My Truth," doesn't blow them away. "It's a blues
tune," Paul explains, "a safe choice for her." As she's going over
the song with them, Ty, who collaborated on her song, walks into the
room and starts taking over the rehearsal. Even though he's not
singing the song, Ty says, he can still show INXS his talents at
writing, arranging and producing. Ty's "a very forceful
personality," Paul says, but he notes that Deanna doesn't seem to
mind, she almost seems relieved by his presence.
MiG's song, a surging power ballad, also leaves Paul and Jim
under whelmed. For Jim, the chorus doesn't elevate the song the way
it should, a critique MiG disagrees with. Paul's opinion is even
harsher; for him, the song is just not "cohesive." MiG leaves the
rehearsal a little shaken, and it adds another layer of uncertainty
to his decision. Should he play it safe and take Suzie up on her
trade, or should he stay the course and play his own tune?
