This week is the most emotional elimination show "Rock Star:INXS"
has seen yet. Saying goodbye is getting so hard that Dave has officially designated
elimination day "Black Wednesday." And tonight, Deanna's departure is particularly
painful.
Starting out, everyone is a bit subdued. They all agree that last
night was probably the best show so far (although, given the
problems "Dream On" gave her, Jordis is less keen than the others),
and no one is sure who will end up in the bottom three.
"The competition is getting down to the wire," Suzie says. Jordis worries that if
she's in the bottom three, INXS might decide she's not right for
them. Ty, who still feels the sting of being
up for elimination a few weeks ago, hopes that the voting reflects
the performances. Some people, he says pointedly, should end up in
the bottom three, just to find out what it's like.
The Rockers are also wondering who gets to do this week's encore.
Ty, J.D., Suzie and Deanna think it should
be their turn. Ty says he put on a show last night and should be
rewarded for it. Deanna believes an original song should be honored
in place of a cover. But this week the honor goes to Suzie, the
self-proclaimed "Queen of the Bottom Three," for her performance of
"Start Me Up." She
doesn't cry, but she does reprise her stage dive.
Usually Brooke announces the bottom three
right after the encore, but this week, some issues need to be aired.
For one thing, the Rockers are bridling at INXS's comments. Deanna
wonders what they mean when they talk about her "comfort zone."
She's a power rock singer, and she can't change her core. But for
all her bravado, some doubt creeps in. If she can't "give INXS what
they need," she says, "maybe I shouldn't be in the band." Marty has no such reservations. INXS
has asked him to tone down the screaming, but he's not going to
change the way he sings. "I'll meet them halfway," he says, because
if he goes all the way, "then what's left of me."
Tim assures the Rockers that the harsh criticism was just a test,
one that Marty passes with flying colors. "We have such respect for
you," he tells Marty. Kirk adds that INXS tries to push the Rockers
in different directions so they can see their boundaries.
J.D. has pushed the boundaries with both his performances and his
behavior. At this point in the competition, he says, it's about who
gels best with INXS. But for all his controversial behavior, Dave
says J.D.'s voice is "totally suited" to the INXS back catalog. The
reason for that, J.D. tells Dave, is that hearing INXS was one of
the reasons he became a singer-songwriter.
For Suzie, the question is whether, even after giving an
encore-worthy performance, she's ready to end up in the bottom three
yet again. She's sanguine about the possibility; after all, she's
been there four times before. Besides, she says, "tonight's the
night to kick INXS tunes."
Jordis has been quiet during all this, and Dave asks her if she
regrets taking a risk last night with "Dream On." She says she
didn't see it as a risk, at least until she got to the rehearsal
room. She stuck with it, determined to hit that note, because if she
saw someone else singing the song, she'd want them to go for the
note. That said, she feels she deserves to be in the bottom three.
Dave says that if she's there, it's because she has guts.
It's now time to find out who ended up in this week's bottom
three. Again, the early returns were posted at the end of last
night's show -- Ty, Deanna and Jordis were in the bottom three early
on. As the evening continued, J.D., Marty and MiG also spent time in the lower
depths. The one Rocker who stayed clear of the red zone was Suzie --
she's safe. Brooke reveals the final tally leaving Ty, Deanna and,
for the first time, Marty singing for INXS to remain on the show.
Ty's up first, and Dave can't believe it. Kirk says INXS loved
his version of "Proud Mary," but the audience thought
differently. Kirk asks him to sing "What You Need." Ty's performance of
the INXS song is a showstopper, with a powerfully soulful vocal that
would do Prince, Maxwell or John Legend proud. Kirk calls it
great, and in a new twist for the elimination show, asks Ty how he
feels about singing INXS songs. They make him want to sing and
dance, Ty says, adding that after this, "maybe next time more people
will think I'm supposed to be the singer for INXS."
When Deanna takes center stage for her song, Dave tells her to
"forget about the comfort zone." Andrew, who says that when she
sings, "the sun comes out," asks her to perform "Elegantly Wasted." Her version is
elegant, with a dusky tone that adds some mystery to the tune.
Andrew pronounces her vocal "surefire." Deanna enjoys singing INXS
songs, she tells him, because they make her do two things she loves:
rock hard and dance.
Dave calls Marty's ending up in the bottom three a crime. Jon
asks him to sing "Don't Change." Marty doesn't change
his style for the INXS song, but he doesn't scream either; his
clipped phrasing gives the tune a Brit-pop accent, crossing INXS
with the Kaiser Chiefs and Razorlight.
It's an impressive enough performance to get him sent back to the
Rockers' box, safe for this week. As Ty and Deanna embrace, Tim
delivers the bad news: Deanna is not right for INXS.
This time, Suzie isn't the only Rocker to cry at the
announcement: Ty, MiG, Jordis and Deanna start to tear up as well.
Deanna is so emotional that she can barely talk but gets out a --
'thanks' for INXS, the other Rockers and the audience. She tells the
band she's learned a lot during her time on the show. She'll
certainly be missed on the show, but it's sure you'll be hearing
something from her soon.
How will the other Rockers react to Deanna's elimination? Who
will be singing for INXS next? Tune in next week to VH1 on Sunday at
8PM and to CBS on Tuesday at 10PM and Wednesday at 9PM to find out.
