It's starting to look pretty empty in the Rockers box, and with
this week's elimination, more than half of the original 15 Rockers
will have been sent home. Deciding who has to leave is getting
harder. Tim explains that it's no longer about being good -- at this
point in the competition, deciding who stays and goes will be based
on who INXS thinks is the best
fit for their band, and it's Jessica who's not right
for INXS.
But before they get to the bitter, a little sweetness is in
order, and this week, instead of reading the list of who is in the
bottom three, Brooke leads off with the
names of the three Rockers who received the most votes: MiG, Marty and Jordis. No surprises there
for Dave, who also announces
which Rocker will perform an encore this week: It's MiG, who not
only gave a great performance but saved Dave "thousands in couples
therapy." But as MiG settles into his seat behind the piano and
plays a few notes, he surprises everyone by deciding that he
shouldn't be the only one up there. He invites Marty and Jordis to
join him on stage.
With the three of them on stage, there are only five Rockers left
in the box, and three of them will be vulnerable. As the show
concluded last night, Jessica, Deanna and Ty had the lowest vote
totals. Jessica, who has been in the bottom three so often she
should be paying rent, is pretty sanguine about her station. "I feel
like a pro," she tells Brooke. Deanna admits that after her
performance last night, she "absolutely" deserves to be in the
bottom three. Only Ty, whose Memphis soul-styled "Maggie May" galvanized INXS, is
surprised to be in the bottom three. As well he should be. As voting
continued, he received enough votes to raise him out of the red
zone, and he's safe for this week.
Taking his place is another unexpected choice, Suzie. It's her second
consecutive week in the bottom three, and she's nearly speechless.
Her only reaction is to stand and smile, until finally "le mot
juste" comes to her and she tells Brooke she feels "bad."
Garry says the band is surprised to see her up there this week
(they were also surprised she was in last week's bottom three), and
Suzie leads things off in fine fashion performing "By My Side," which fits her voice like
a velvet glove. She shows the control that INXS has wanted to see
from her, building each verse until she brings the full power of her
voice to the chorus, climaxing by dropping to her knees for the
final chorus, a bit of stagecraft that would do Destiny's Child proud.
Jessica is, by this point, an expert at singing INXS songs --
when she walks to center stage, Jon half-jokingly tells her "here we
are again." He lets her know that INXS thought her performance last
night was her best. For tonight's performance, they want her to show
them what she can do with "Mystify." And Jessica, as she has the
previous three weeks, sings the INXS song well. It's not by any
means a riveting performance, but it's nothing to be ashamed of
either.
Deanna, the last of the three to perform, just can't help but get
under your skin. Her smoky voice has an aura of dusky mystery, a
kind of femme fatale quality that lures you in. Her take on "Never Tear Us Apart" brings a cool
desperation to the song's pledge of undying love.
With three such impressive performances, Tim calls this week's
decision the hardest ever. None of this week's bottom three, he
says, did badly last night, and all three of them were great
tonight. But one has to be sent home, and dispensing with all the
usual buildup, he comes right out with the news that for Jessica,
the fourth time is not the charm, and she's not the right singer for
INXS.
Jessica, who probably has been rehearsing this speech in her head
for the last month, is relaxed and generous in defeat. She thanks
INXS for having her on the show and giving her the opportunity, and
she tells them the show has been a great learning experience. Dave
compliments her on the growth she's shown during her time on the
show: the woman standing on stage this evening is night and day
different than the singer who came to Los Angeles. Now that her time
on "Rock Star:INXS" is over, Jessica will go back to Chicago to
rejoin her band Cover Gurl and try to get a record deal.
With Jessica gone, the competition is only getting tighter. To
see what happens in the Mansion, tune in at 8PM Sunday on VH1, and
for next week's performance and elimination shows, tune in to CBS at
10PM Tuesday and 9PM Wednesday (all times ET/PT).
