With nine Rockers left, one-third will be in the bottom three and
up for elimination this week, so the opinion of the TV audience
takes on more and more influence. Last night, the early returns put
Jessica, Brandon and Deanna in the bottom
three. But as the voting continued, five of the Rockers were, at one
point during the voting, among the lowest in votes received. When
the show starts tonight, Brooke asks those five to
stand -- Jessica, Brandon, Deanna, J.D. and Suzie.
But before Brooke announces the final tally, INXS wants to compliment
two Rockers who distinguished themselves last night. Marty is given a rave
review for his last-minute decision to perform "Mr. Brightside" as an acoustic solo.
"Good on ya, mate," Tim tells him, calling the decision "clever." Ty, who gets the nod
because he redeemed himself with his soulful rendition of Bob Marley's "No Woman, No Cry," is awarded the
encore and takes the stage to reprise his stunning version of the
reggae hit.
As the applause dies down, it's time to get down to business.
Brooke again has the envelope with the names of the Rockers in the
bottom three. J.D. and Deanna are let off the hook, leaving Jessica,
Suzie and Brandon remaining up for elimination. Of the three, Suzie
is the Rocker that INXS was most surprised to see in the bottom
three. They were impressed last night by her re-arrangement of "Losing My Religion," but as Dave tells her, it's the
fans who buy the tickets and CDs, and their opinion is what counts.
With Garry and Jon once again sitting in with the House Band, the three
vulnerable Rockers are given their assignments. Jessica is up first.
You have to wonder what goes through Jessica's mind when she hears
that the song she has to sing to remain on "Rock Star:INXS" is
called "Disappear." But this hit from the "X" album gives her a chance to show the
passion and excitement that INXS found lacking in last night's
performance of "Come As You Are." In a situation that's
becoming something of a pattern, Jessica continues to give INXS's
songs the kind of enthusiastic and emotional performance that keeps
her, week after week, from being sent home. It may be a cliché, but
in this case, it's true: On Wednesdays, she performs as though her
life depends on it.
Andrew tells Brandon that the song INXS has chosen for him, "Don't Lose Your Head," is the kind of
bluesy shouter that's right up his alley, but they're going to watch
his delivery closely. Maybe the pressure gets to him, because
surprisingly, he falters on the song from the "Elegantly Wasted" album that was also
featured in the movie "Face/Off." He's about a half-tone sharp
in the early part of the song and can't seem to find his rhythmic
footing. He falls behind a step, then rushes to keep up, even
messing up the lyrics three times, and looks at MiG, who was mouthing the
words. Things settle down after the first chorus, but it might be
too late to save him.
Suzie is also given a bluesy rocker, "Bitter Tears," an international hit
from "X," and she makes the most of it. She digs down to the heart
of the song, slipping her vocal into the jangly, honky-tonk piano
that drives the tune, taking her husky voice to the brink, but with
impressive control, never sliding into hoarseness.
When INXS returns from their deliberations, Tim tells the three
Rockers that, again, it's a hard job to choose who to send home. The
first person sent back to the Rockers' box is Suzie. Kirk says INXS
didn't feel she should be in the bottom three in the first place,
but "the public thought differently." Her performance proves INXS
right, so she's safe for another week.
Tim praises Jessica for her resilience. She may have had to sing
INXS songs three weeks in a row, but she does them well, so she's
not going anywhere. That, of course, means that Brandon is told the
words none of the Rockers want to hear -- that he's not right for
INXS.
Brandon takes the news gracefully, bowing and throwing kisses at
the now eight remaining rockers, and thanks INXS for the
opportunity. Even being among the final 15, he tells them, was an
honor, and he learned a lot while he was on the show.
Dave returns the compliment, telling Brandon that although he is
not right for INXS, he should keep on doing what he's doing. Dave
says he will miss him and was glad to have the chance to get to know
him and watch him grow over the last few weeks, something INXS
wholeheartedly agrees with as they ask him to come to their platform
for a proper goodbye.
It's getting down to the wire on "Rock Star:INXS." With only
eight Rockers left, even your favorite could be vulnerable. To keep
up with the Rockers, be sure to watch VH1 on Sundays at 8PM and CBS
on Tuesdays at 10PM and Wednesdays at 9PM (all times ET/PT).
Next week, "Rock Star:INXS" goes acoustic, putting an additional
challenge on the Rockers. Every vocal imperfection will be heard. Be
sure to check in at Rockstar.msn.com for all the recaps and other
news about the show.
