On last week's elimination show, we discovered that INXS isn't
shy about pulling the trigger if more than one of the Rockers in the
bottom three doesn't measure up. But given the generally high
quality of the performances this week, tonight's decision will be
tough.
But before anyone finds out who is up for elimination, INXS has a
bouquet for one Rocker. This week, it's Jordis who's singled out for giving
the best performance of the week. Jon says her version of David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the
World" is "what music's about" and asks her to take the stage to do
an encore. It's another stunner, and Jordis is again so emotionally
affected by the song that she nearly breaks down.
That's all the good news anyone's going to hear for awhile. As
she does every Wednesday, Brooke brings out an
envelope with the names of the Rockers who received the three lowest
vote totals last night. Once again, she asks the Rockers to raise
their hands if they think their names are on the list. Ty, Jessica and Deanna raise their hands. When Brooke
reads the names, only one of them is right: Ty. He is joined in the
bottom three by Tara and Brandon. Everyone seems surprised to
hear Brooke say Ty's name, while Jessica -- who must have been
holding her breath while the names were read -- lets go with a
visible sigh of relief. She's not going anywhere this week.
Tim is also surprised to see Ty on the list, at least in terms of
overall talent. But the vote is based on last night's performance.
Ty, who calls himself his hardest critic, is sanguine about being
there, and INXS asks him to sing "Kick." "I'll kick ass," he tells INXS.
Kirk reminds Tara that she's been up for elimination three times
and asks her to sing "Beautiful Girl." Garry notes that
Brandon did not raise his hand earlier and asks if Brandon is
surprised. "Damn straight," he answers. "I thought I gave a great
performance."
Brandon is the first to show INXS he has what it takes to front
their band. And sitting in with the House Band tonight is Jon on drums and
Andrew on guitar. "Devil Inside," the song Brandon is
asked to sing, is an edgy slice of dance pop, powered by a snaking
guitar riff. Michael Hutchence gave one of his steamiest vocal
performances on "Devil Inside," which reached No. 2 on the charts
making it one of INXS's biggest hits. The newly clean-shaven
Brandon, decked out in a sharp black suit, cuts a dapper figure on
the stage and delivers a vocal performance to match. Although it
seems at times that he's trying a little too hard to sound like
Hutchence -- and he occasionally loses his place in the tune's
jittery rhythms -- he sounds (and looks) like a real frontman.
Tara follows with "Beautiful Girl." One of the most popular cuts
from the "Welcome to Wherever You Are" album,
it's among the loveliest songs in INXS's catalog and was written by
Andrew for his daughter. "I love this song," she gushes as the
performance begins, then graces the song with one of her gentlest
vocals. It's a little emotionally distant, and the ballad gives her
less of a chance to show off than the two upbeat numbers the guys
are given to sing. And Tara can't possibly feel confident performing
a song that includes the lyrics "she's so scared/so very
frightened/anything could happen" and "she wants to go home."
Ty sings "Kick," and for tonight, it's obvious that INXS saved
the best for last. Taking a hint from the soul-inspired title song
from "Kick," INXS's best-selling album, Ty jettisons any hint of the
theater in his voice and instead takes it to church, befitting of
the song's boisterous, surging music and testifying lyrics. Sounding
more like Anthony Hamilton than Michael Hutchence,
it's an electrifying performance and one that he ends by stage
diving into the crowd.
So it's no surprise that Ty is the first to be told he's safe
this week. "That was a fantastic performance," Tim tells him. He
adds, "you're not going anywhere" and sends him back to the Rockers'
box.
Tara and Brandon present almost opposite quandaries for INXS.
Tara sang her song beautifully, Tim says, but her vocal lacked the
kind of passion the band wants to hear. Brandon's performance was
nothing if not passionate, but in his passion he sometimes lost the
plot of the song, and his timing and pitch were sketchy in places.
But Tim says that the potential of Brandon's big voice is the
deciding factor. So this week, Tara hears the news that she's not
right for INXS.
Brandon is gallant when he hears the words, taking Tara in his
arms and giving her a giant bear hug. Tara is also incredibly
gracious. Sounding more like a winner on an awards show than someone
who has been eliminated from a contest, she first tells INXS that
she's relieved: "My little ticker couldn't take this anymore." She
lets everyone know how much she has appreciated working with
everyone on the show and how much she has learned while being on
"Rock Star:INXS." Tara finishes by expressing her "deepest
gratitude." And when Suzie starts to cry, Tara tells her, "Don't you
worry about me!"
INXS responds in kind, inviting her to their platform for "a
proper goodbye," as Andrew compliments her for her heart and
resilience and Dave tells her how much he's enjoyed watching her
grow as a performer each week. Although she's leaving the show, she
leaves a winner with a great career in front of her. And if you can
find the albums she made with Joydrop, "Metasexual" and "Viberate,"
give them a listen to get a fuller appreciation of Tara's talents.
With Tara gone, we're down to nine Rockers. Who will be in the
bottom three next week, and who will be sent home? Tune in to CBS
next week at 10PM ET/PT Tuesday and 9PM ET/PT Wednesday to find out,
and be sure to point your browser to rockstar.msn.com to check out
the recaps. 'Til then . . .
