Identifying as transgender, his influences are likewise divergent, a professed early love of U.K. synth-pop less obvious than his ... moreadmiration for Nina Simone, whose skeletal piano playing and nakedly emotional vocal style could describe Hegarty's own impact. Although far removed from the mainstream, his recordings and performances have earned Britain's Mercury Prize and international critical acclaim.
