What one song or album can you always listen to and how did you find
it? Bobby Darin's "More": It's not a very exciting story, but
when I was 18 I visited my publishing company in Los Angeles. They said I could
raid their cupboard, so I picked out a load of CDs of people I'd never heard of,
mostly, and one I picked purely for the packaging. It was an Ultra Lounge CD for
its leopard-print, furry-to-touch cover. I think it's the greatest love song.
What was the first record you ever bought and do you still have
it?? My parents knew about my slight preteen obsession with Michael Jackson, so come birthdays that was always sorted.
The first album that I bought myself at a counter somewhere was on one late
windy and rainy night in the north of Scotland. My brother had played Fleetwood Mac's "Tango in the Night" far, far too many times
in a row and I was going stir crazy in the back. We stopped off at a petrol
station and chose from about five cassettes by the till. My sister chose Jason Donovan (ew!) and I bought Bobby Brown's "Don't Be Cruel." I didn't know who he was but
thought he looked pretty cool (I think he had a headset mic on). I actually
ended up loving the album.
What was the first live show you ever saw? I was 11 and
my best friend, Holly, and her parents were going to see the Bee Gees at Wembley Arena. They invited me along. I was
pretty excited. Knew they did that song "Staying Alive" because my brother used
to play it all the time. When they played "Staying Alive," I got up on my seat
and started to dance around but was told to "sit back down and behave," I think.
What was the best live show you ever saw? Arve Henriksen at 93 Feet East in London about 5 years ago.
Improvised trumpet. He makes the most beautiful sound imaginable. I actually
cried to the point that Guy (of the Frou Frou variety) was a little worried about me.
It was raw emotion that was pouring out of Arve. Just wonderful. I'll never
forget it.
