Genre: psychedelic pop
From: Middletown, Conn.
Album: "Oracular Spectacular"
How many people start a band in
college, and less than a year after graduation sign to a major
label? It's quite an achievement, and exactly what happened to
Ben Goldwasser and Andrew Van Wyngarden, the two founding
members of MGMT, whose trippy sonic combination of
electronica, psychedelia and Brit-pop has quickly captivated
the ears of music lovers. Their new Columbia full-length, " Oracular
Spectacular," builds on the promise of 2005's "Time to
Pretend" EP. Produced by Dave Fridmann -- best known for his
work with The Flaming Lips
-- "Oracular" has received a stellar critical reception. Can
glory be far behind?

Genre: (two-car) garage rock
From: London
Album: "Neptune"
Though the Duke Spirit wears its
influences proudly -- My Bloody
Valentine, The Cramps, Nirvana -- they
lack little in power and originality. This Cheltenham,
England, quintet met at art school, and in 2006 released their
stateside debut, " Cuts Across the
Land," on Startime International. A seemingly endless
touring schedule followed, including opening stints for Queens of the Stone
Age, Kasabian, and Mercury Rev.
Being road warriors has paid off; their new CD, " Neptune," out on
Shangri-La, sharpens the corner and hones the hooks on tracks
such as "I Do Believe," "Dog Roses," and "Wooden Heart."
