CLIFTON CHENIER: Displaced French Canadians evolved the
Francophone roots music of Cajun music, taken by rural African-Americans to a
funkier province as "zydeco" (from les haricots, French for snap beans, cited in
an early hit), a rollicking mix of dance and folk tunes. Accordionist Clifton
Chenier was a key figure in carrying zydeco's saucy two-steps, waltzes and fast
rave-ups beyond the bayou and into festivals, clubs and concerts. (Image: David
