Guy Ritchie gave Madonna the ultimate gift for her 50th birthday on Saturday -- the gift of public schmoopiness. "She looks better now than she ever has done," he gushed to nearly 100 well-wishers who gathered at London hot spot Volstead to pay tribute to his muscular missus, according to the London Sun. "I'm so proud. I love her so much." The director's heartfelt words come after months of rumors predicting the imminent demise of their nearly eight-year union, which was rocked last month when Madonna was accused of having an "affair of the heart" with New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez (the reports were denied by all parties). Also offering up an emotional present for Madonna was her 11-year-old daughter, Lourdes, who the London Daily Mirror says had her mom in tears as she sat down at the piano and performed the song "Never Alone" from "Fame." Ritchie organized the bash, which the Mirror says set him back around $200,000. Among the reported indulgences: cases of pink Krug champagne, mounds of caviar, foie gras, kosher burgers and card tricks from illusionist David Blaine (that last one seems more like a party-killer, but whatever).
The guest of honor, decked out in thigh-high boots and a backbreaking amount of gold around her neck, expressed her gratitude to family (sons Rocco, 8, and David, 2, also attended) and friends in a speech that apparently lasted a long-winded 40 minutes. No word on whether the famously disciplined pop icon threw caution to the wind and scarfed down some of her elaborate three-tier chocolate, raspberry and vanilla birthday cake, but she did manage to cut loose at the soiree. About 40 dancers from her about-to-launch Sticky & Sweet tour joined her as she boogied down to her hits past and present. "She loved it when her songs came on," a spy tells the Sun. "Her dancers were pulling out all the moves, break-dancing around her. It was like a final rehearsal for the tour." Even Lourdes, Rocco and David joined their mom on the dance floor, which was decorated with a large "M," although Ritchie reportedly kept a safe distance, watching the action from the bar. And despite partying and shaking her groove thing into the wee hours, Madonna hit the gym bright and early Sunday morning. Meanwhile, did Guy shower his wife with more than just compliments on her big day? Seems so, although there appears to be some disagreement over exactly what he gave her. Britain's Sunday People says Ritchie surprised the Big M before the party with a short film filled with snippets from her memorable life thus far, a slick home movie that finished with shots of them together. "She was utterly touched. It was a real show of love, especially after all of the hard times," says a snitch. "He capped it with a short poem he wrote. It was full of emotion and declared how much he loved her, but at times it was tongue-in-cheek and made her laugh." The paper claims Ritchie also shelled out close to a million smackers to hire elusive graffiti artist Banksy to do a portrait of Madonna. The London Daily Mail, for its part, says he wrote her a "love letter" promising to support her bid to adopt a little girl from Malawi, a rumored plan that her rep adamantly denied last week. He also supposedly presented her with earrings and a necklace from Bulgari worth about a half a million bucks and arranged for a type of rose to bear her name. Then there's In Touch, which believes Guy picked up a $100,000 diamond-covered Rolex for Madonna, because nothing says "I love you" quite like marking a major age milestone with a device that measures the passage of time. |
