It only takes a second or two for a star to scrawl a signature, but for the
eager fan on the receiving end of that John Hancock, it's a momentous occasion,
one that will be talked about for years to come. Over the last few days, there
have been several reports of celebrity autograph encounters, including one that
apparently left one little girl's spirit crushed. Here's a rundown:
There are times when a star just wants to make like Greta Garbo and be left
alone. Take Hilary Duff, for instance. According to the New York Daily
News, the body-conscious starlet was having a "quiet dinner"
last week at a Texas eatery with less famous big sister Haylie and their parents when she was "accosted" by a pair
of memorabilia-wielding tweens. "On their way out, the owner asked if Hilary
would sign a menu for her daughter and she did," a spy tells the paper. But she
was less obliging when confronted by the 9-year-old girls, who supposedly wanted
her to autograph posters and T-shirts. "[Hilary] said, 'I don't really get to
spend a lot of time with my family, sorry' and walked out the door," claims the
snitch. "She made one of the little girls cry." Duff's rep didn't respond to our
request for comment on the alleged rebuff and subsequent bawling.
Justin Timberlake may be a crankypants when it comes to the
paparazzi, but he loosens up -- at least a little -- when it comes to his
admirers. People reports the singer was exiting an Italian restaurant in Los
Angeles with squeeze Jessica Biel when he was approached by some fans. Justin,
who was recently accused of hurling insults and a variety of random
objects (e.g. fruit, water bottles, loogies) at some teenage fans in Sweden,
granted their request for an autograph, but "politely" nixed any pics.
Anne Hathaway's megawatt smile was on full display this
weekend in Manhattan. The New York Daily News says the scandal-free actress
readily struck a pose for a "delighted" mom and her young daughter after they
stopped her on the street. "They both looked so cheery and happy," the snapper
said of Hathaway and her unidentified male companion (it may have been her
moneybags beau, Raffaello Follieri). "I asked Anne and her friend if I could
take a picture of them and they happily obliged."
Jennifer Lopez may never fully shake her diva image, but she
gamely accommodated an unusual request from a fan as she dined al fresco in New
York on Sunday with pal Leah Remini. According to People, the callipygian
multi-hyphenate used her Sharpie to sign a construction worker's hardhat.
Mandy Moore lived up to her reputation as an adorable,
apple-cheeked charmer during an autograph session with 10 contest winners
in Ohio on Tuesday. One fan gushed to the Dayton Daily News that Mandy "was not
at all like what I think of when I think of celebrities. She was very down to
earth. She was very sweet." Another Mandy devotee thought it was "really nice
how she could just talk to regular people like that."
