Hilary Duff may be taking the lemonade from lemons approach
to her bustup with Joel Madden, apparently channeling all her teen angst over
their split and his lightning-fast rebound with Nicole Richie into some emotional pop ditties.
Radar reports several tracks from the shiny-toothed starlet's forthcoming
album "Dignity" (feel free to let out an "oy" right about now) appear to revolve
around the paparazzi-averse Good Charlotte frontman and the rickety, wrong-way-driving
starlet, whose bony finger has lately been buckling under the weight of a
suspicious sparkler.
Take the title tune, for instance, which contains loaded lyrics such as,
"Where's your dignity? I think you lost it in the Hollywood Hills/Can't buy
respect but you can pick up that bill."
The digs continue in the song's second verse, with the bitter turns of
phrase, "Always with Mr. Right, but then you have a fight/Run into your friend's
ex, he's happy to be your next/ Tomorrow's paper's coming out so kiss him fast,
watch the cameras flash."
Then there's "Gypsy Woman," which warns, "She lets you think that you found
her first/That's how she works her sick and twisted gypsy curse." The song seems
to taunt Lionel's little girl, sniping, "Talks with a grin 'cause
she's got no shame/Enjoy the fame, bringing down the family name."
The number "Stranger," meanwhile, may also be aimed squarely at Duff's
much-tattooed (and much-older) ex, whom she called it quits with in November
after two-and-a-half years of togetherness: "You treat me like a queen when we
go out/Wanna show everyone what our love's about/All wrapped up in me whenever
there's a crowd/But when no one's around there's no kindness in your eyes ...
When I think of all the time we wasted, I could cry."
Hilary's rep acknowledges that a few ditties directly relate to the so-called
"love triangle," conceding to the mag, "Some are, yes. But she has gone through
a lot, including a very frightening pair of Russian stalkers."
Not one to let a life experience go by without setting it to song, she
apparently immortalizes that scary episode in "Dreamer," in which she warbles,
"Don't you have better things to do with your life/Than hang around and stare at
me and complicate mine?"
In the past, the Duffster, 19, has tried to put a positive spin on her
parting of ways with Madden, 27, whom she began dating when she was barely old
enough to drive.
"There was nothing -- no fight, no 'He did this, I did this,'" she told Ryan Seacrest in January. "It was just time for people to
move on and do different things."
A mature sentiment, sure, but one that's a little harder to turn into a
catchy tune.
Still, there were whispers Duff was livid over Madden's hookup with Richie,
with a source telling Us Weekly in late December, "She can't believe he's dating
Nicole and thinks she's a skank ... She kept saying she never knew Joel at all."
