What is it about Princess Diana that makes her so identifiable to tabloid
types? Last year, Paris Hilton compared herself to the benevolent, beloved
royal as she dubbed herself this decade's "iconic blonde." Now, it's Fergie's turn.
"People put celebrities on a pedestal and act like they're perfect. But I'm
more like the people's artist -- the same way Diana was 'the people's
princess,'" the "London Bridge" warbler (ack, now it's stuck in our head) tells
Blender, which has named her its Woman of the Year. "I'm a little more human
than other artists. I'm not afraid to show my flaws and have a laugh about it."
That includes the embarrassing bladder control problem she experienced
onstage during a Black Eyed Peas performance in 2005, pictures of which will
haunt her until she's old and grey.
"I was late, so I didn't go to the restroom before I went onstage," explains
Fergie, who says it didn't help that she had to jump "up and down" while belting
out the moving lyrics to "Let's Get Retarded," a ditty that includes the apt
line, "Lose control of body and soul."
"It was horrible," she sighs. "But, whatever. It happened."
Besides, Fergie posits, "It's like there's one or two things the public knows
about every famous person. With Ashlee Simpson, everyone knows she had a nose job. With me,
everyone knows I wet my pants onstage and had a crystal-meth addiction; that
sucks. You have to laugh."
At least to keep from crying, which is what she starts to do while discussing
how much she'll miss boyfriend Josh Duhamel when she heads out on tour.
"Here I go again. Don't make me cry, you [bleeper]," Fergie jokingly warns
the interviewer, who had asked whether she hopes the square-jawed actor will pop
the question.
"We're practically married, anyway," she sidesteps. "I'm madly in love with
him. He understands how to treat a woman and give me respect."
