Have you been losing sleep over whether Jessica and Ashlee Simpson's dad Joe is meddling in their romances with Tony Romo and Pete Wentz, respectively? Yeah, didn't think so, but that hasn't stopped some blabby insiders from stirring up trouble.

"He thinks nobody can manage his daughters' careers, or love lives, better than he can," a Simpson source tells E! News.

First up is Jessica, 27, whose dad's enthusiasm for her Dallas Cowboys quarterback beau apparently rivals his past boasting about her bustline.

According to the snitch, Papa Joe never really cottoned to ex son-in-law Nick Lachey, but he "loves" Romo and refers to him as "Texas royalty" (he also reputedly believes his offspring to be "the perfect Texas Rose").

Alas, OK! isn't quite convinced the couple is one for the ages, claiming the NFLer tried to sack the starlet after his team's playoff defeat, which came after she was unfairly labeled a bad luck charm by her fellow Lone Star staters.

One supposed sticking point is geography, with Romo based in Texas and Simpson set on staying in Los Angeles.

"It was the moment he realized it wasn't going to work with Jessica in the long term," asserts a Simpson pal.

According to the tab, Romo tried the old, "Let's just be pals," line of defense during a Jan. 17 phone call.

"He said he thought it was better if they went back to being friends," maintains the mole. "'Just friends' is not in Jessica's vocabulary ..." (Still, former squeeze John Mayer still has her back.)

The mag says in a "last-ditch" effort, Romo asked Simpson to tag along on a recent hunting trip.

"It's Tony's way of punishing Jess," posits the confidante. "Jessica Simpson hunting -- and without her entourage? Forget it!"

(Color us skeptical, but we're pretty sure we saw a similar scenario play out on "Newlyweds," except Jessica unsuccessfully tried to camp while clutching her Louis Vuitton bag.)

Simpson, for her part, is fuming over the allegations that she and Romo are on the outs and has sicced her legal pitbull on OK!.

According to her lawyer's letter, the "utterly false" article is "based on nothing more than rumor, gossip and innuendo."

What's more, Jessica and Tony "have not broken off their romantic relationship" and she wants a "prominent and unambiguous retraction."

Meanwhile, Ashlee and Pete are also facing whispers from those pesky sources over her dad.

"Yeah, he hates that she's with Pete," contends an insider to E!. "He thinks he's a wimp. And he tells Ashlee so."

But it seems the newly (and flatteringly) auburn-tressed starlet, 23, isn't too worried over whether her flat-iron-sharing Fall Out Boy flame measures up in the eyes of her ostensibly picky pop.

"She's not like Jessica. Dad doesn't like her boyfriend? So what. She doesn't care," brushes off the spy. "She's been that way since she was 16 years old."

But does it bother Wentz? So claims In Touch, which says an eyewitness overheard him recently telling Ashlee, "Your dad doesn't like me, but he loves Tony. You know it."

Late last year, however, Pete put the kibosh on rumors he was odd man out with the Simpson clan, insisting to MTV, "I think Joe gets a really bad rap in the press. He's always been nothing but nice to me."
