The new year has brought a new round of engagement whispers to Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz, who celebrated the arrival of 2008 with some lip-on-lip action at The Shore Club in Miami.

The latest reports were sparked by the delicate and understated band that the pert-nosed warbler was snapped sporting on her all-important finger, which PageSix.com claims she "flaunted" on New Year's Eve and "showed off ... with even greater flair" the next day while perambulating around South Beach with her emo-haired Fall Out Boy beau.

But reps for the skinny pants-preferring, eye shadow-sharing pair insist to Us that the "I do" rumors are so much hooey.

"Ashlee is not engaged," her mouthpiece maintains to Us, an assertion echoed by Pete's publicist.

This is the third time in six months that the petite squeezes, who have been dating for a little less than a year, have faced down marital mumblings.

The first rumors popped up in July before resurfacing in November, when FOXNews.com reported a "glowing" Simpson flashed a "big diamond" sparkler at a Los Angeles soiree (her current bauble appears to be rock-free).

In related news, did Kim Kardashian cap off a busy year, filled with a sex tape scrap, a reality show, a Playboy spread and a plethora of paparazzi shots of her cartoonishly cushioned posterior, with a marriage proposal?

That's the word from both OK!, which declares her engaged to NFL running back Reggie Bush, 22, and Life & Style, which says the football star recently slipped a digit-buckling 10-carat, $500,000 diamond ring on her finger.

But Kardashian, 27, was without a telltale jewel as she celebrated New Year's in Miami with Bush, whom she began dating in May, and she insists to Us that the nuptial reports are premature.

"It's not true," she pooh-poohs to the mag, before hoisting the crushing weight of great expectations on Bush's shoulders by adding, "Not yet!"

Kardashian's willingness to dish about the state of her romance seems to belie what she told OK! about how she's going to try "to keep it as private as possible" in the future, an odd pronouncement from someone whose life is filmed as entertainment.

If the engagement does come to fruition, we'll keep our fingers crossed that Khloe and Kourtney's quest to find the perfect bridesmaid dresses will be filmed as a very special episode of "Keeping Up With the Kardashians."
