The music: No music festival has exerted a more seductive
pull than this 39-year-old gathering of the tribes, which regulars know simply
as "Fest." No wonder: Founded to showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Gulf
Coast, Jazz Fest has evolved into a dazzling banquet of blues, rock, gospel,
jazz, folk, pop and world music spiced with Creole and Cajun styles. Louisiana's
own signature styles and performers rightly command center stage, but
out-of-town stars revel in the festivities. Multiple stages compete with food
courts that provide their own culinary diaspora. Avid music fans have planned
their vacations around Fest for nearly four decades, and one visit will explain
why.
