Summer Music Festivals 2008

New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival
Location: Fair Grounds Race Course, New Orleans
Dates: April 25-27, May 1-4
Tickets: $40-$50 daily (adults); $5 daily (children)

The artists: The Neville Brothers, Stevie Wonder, Billy Joel, Jimmy Buffett, Tim McGraw, Santana, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, Sheryl Crow, Widespread Panic, Dr. John, Al Green, Diana Krall, Keyshia Cole, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, the Raconteurs, Irma Thomas and more

The music: No music festival has exerted a more seductive pull than this 39-year-old gathering of the tribes, which regulars know simply as "Fest." No wonder: Founded to showcase the rich cultural heritage of the Gulf Coast, Jazz Fest has evolved into a dazzling banquet of blues, rock, gospel, jazz, folk, pop and world music spiced with Creole and Cajun styles. Louisiana's own signature styles and performers rightly command center stage, but out-of-town stars revel in the festivities. Multiple stages compete with food courts that provide their own culinary diaspora. Avid music fans have planned their vacations around Fest for nearly four decades, and one visit will explain why.
