My Morning Jacket
Who they are: Five guys from Louisville who can really play
When: 1998-present
Why they matter: Hard rock + soul = The best live act in
music
With a Southern twang and a Teutonic stomp, My Morning Jacket combine the
heaviest of '70s-type riffs with a ... morelevity and grace otherwise unseen in music of
such power and volume. Records such as 1999's "The Tennessee Fire" showcase this
style, and their latest, "Evil Urges," finds the band, and their leader,
singer-songwriter Jim James, veering hard into falsettoed R&B without losing
an ounce of muscle. And seriously, do not miss them when they come through your
(college) town.
