Biography
Matt Savage is a child prodigy who taught himself to read music and began classical piano studies at age 6 ½, though he was bitten by the jazz bug the following year and studied jazz at the New England Conservatory of Music for the next 3 years. Before the age of 9 he had jammed with a pair of adult musicians, bassist John Funkhouser and drummer Steve Silverstein, who became his sidemen for live concerts and recordings. By age 12, Savage had already recorded 6 CDs for his family run record label and separately performed with Chick Corea and Bobby Watson, as well as jamming with a group of all stars at Birdland, a group that included Clark Terry, Jimmy Heath, and Jon Faddis. The young man continued to attract attention, with numerous television appearances (including 20/20, The Today Show, The View and Montel) as well as being booked with his trio to critical acclaim at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, Birdland and the Blue Note in New York City, and the Kennedy Center. In addition to his rapidly growing talent as a performer, Savage is also a budding composer, including a CD (Cutting Loose) which is made up of fourteen originals. Matt Savage's accomplishments are phenomenal given his tender years, so his future projects will be of great interest to the jazz world. ~ Ken Dryden, Rovi
