John Lennon's killer sorry for being 'an idiot'

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — John Lennon's imprisoned killer says he still gets letters about the pain he has caused.

Mark David Chapman was denied release during his eighth appearance before a parole board last week.

New York state corrections officials on Wednesday released the transcript from the hearing at the Wende Correctional Facility.

Chapman told the parole board he's sorry for "being such an idiot" and seeking notoriety the way he did.

Chapman fired five shots on Dec. 8, 1980, outside the Dakota apartment house where Lennon lived on Manhattan's Upper West Side, striking the ex-Beatle four times.

Chapman was sentenced in 1981 to 20 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to second-degree murder. He will be eligible again for parole in two years.

You made that choice Chapman. People like this should never be allowed out of prison. There are people in prison for selling pot, now those are the people that can say "I was an idiot" and we can accept that and let them free. But waiting outside the apt. for hours and then shooting John Lennon in the back? No, that is pure evil and no cunning use of words will get you out of prison.

Yes, I'm sure your parents thought the same thing, RE: your conception, Mr. Chapman.  Probably right after your mother's pregnancy test came back positive.

Hindsight is 20/20.  Always look before you leap. You can't undo what's been done.

I asked myself what Lennon might say to Chapman today. I searched for quotes from him and came up with these:

“There are two basic motivating forces: fear and love. When we are afraid, we pull back from life. When we are in love, we open to all that life has to offer with passion, excitement, and acceptance. We need to learn to love ourselves first, in all our glory and our imperfections. If we cannot love ourselves, we cannot fully open to our ability to love others or our potential to create. Evolution and all hopes for a better world rest in the fearlessness and open-hearted vision of people who embrace life.”
There's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be...”
“When you're drowning you don't think, I would be incredibly pleased if someone would notice I'm drowning and come and rescue me. You just scream.”
and finally just for the hell of it, this one:
“One thing you can't hide - is when you're crippled inside.”
