The Dells singer Marvin Junior dies

WENN

The Dells lead singer Marvin Junior has died at age 77.

Bing: Listen to the Dells hit 'Oh, What a Night'

The star, best known for the group's hit song "Oh, What a Night," passed away at his home in Harvey, Ill., on Wednesday after suffering kidney failure. The news was confirmed by his son, Marvin Junior Jr.

Junior was among a group of high school friends who formed the doo-wop band in 1952 under the name the El-Rays, and as The Dells, they went on to achieve success with their hit track "Oh, What a Night" in 1956. The group disbanded briefly after they were involved in a car crash in 1958, but they reformed in 1960.

They enjoyed hits with tracks including "Wear It on Our Face," "Always Together" and "Stay in My Corner," and they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2004.

The news of Junior's death comes amid reports his bandmate and fellow founding member Chuck Barksdale is gravely ill. Former bandmember Johnny Funches died of pneumonia in 1998, and John E. Carter, who replaced him in the lineup, died of cancer in 2009.

Is anyone here at MSN reading any of these comments at all? Can someone PLEASE rectify this situation & remove the picture of Mickey McGill & replace it with one of Marvin Junior?

Considering that Marvin has just passed on, Johnny died a few years back & Chuck Barksdale is having health issue, can you imagine how Mickey & his family must feel about having his image associated with being deceased?

Then there's the simple matter of the disrespect being shown to Marvin Junior & his family. Again, we're speaking about a pioneer who is SIX DECADES deep in the annals of music history. I'm willing to go out on a limb & say that had Marvin Junior been a member of The Beach Boys, The Rolling Stones or even Bachmann Turner Overdrive, there would been more attention paid to detail & the correct pictures would be accompanying this story.

I'm not trying to be **** about this but getting this right is very important to the fans of The Dells, as it should be to any serous music journalist or even a high school reporter. Honestly, is it really THAT difficult to track down the CORRECT picture of a man whom is a member of The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame?

I & many other fans of The Dells & for that matter, Soul Music fans, find this alarming lack of detail to be highly insulting, because it appears to us as though this happens FAR too often when it comes to our Black icons.

Can you please rectify this situation? This is a very bad look & is being discussed in a decidedly negative manner on Facebook & other music forums.

MSN...this is a VERY bad look for you because this gives the appearance that you really don't give a damn! We would like to be proven wrong & the placement of the CORRECT picture of Marvin Junior would speak volumes about this.

Thanking you in advance!

As a native of Harvey, Illinois and a fan of the Dells, my thoughts are with his family.

Godspeed, Marvin

This is an  inexcusable and shoddy representation of a major news organization.  The Dells deserve better. They have been outstanding representatives to the soul music world for over 60 years. I am undone that MSN can't even identify the lead singer of this magnificent group. They could have a posted a picture of David Ruffin for all we know. Could the writer, fact checker or editor simply go on you tube and see who the lead singer was, O snap ! I get it , that would be too much work. Rest in Peace Marvin Jr. We know not only who you were, but what you looked like.
