Marianas Trench and Drake lead the way at MuchMusic Awards

Pop rockers Marianas Trench have trumped rapper Drake to top the nominations for Canada's leading music video awards.

The Vancouver-based band lead the field after picking up six nominations for the MuchMusic Video Awards on Wednesday, while hip-hop stars Drake, from Toronto, and Classified, of Nova Scotia, weren't far behind with five and four noms respectively.

All three homegrown acts will compete in the Video of the Year category, alongside Serena Ryder and The Weeknd, and they will also battle it out with Billy Talent and Hedley for the Your Fave Video trophy.

In the global categories, chart-toppers Rihanna, Demi Lovato, Justin Timberlake, Nicki Minaj, Pink, Ed Sheeran, Phillip Phillips, PSY, Taylor Swift and will.i.am are in the running for the Best International Video of the Year by an Artist prize. The International Video of the Year by a Group accolade will be a fight between fun., Jay-Z and Kanye West, Maroon 5, One Direction, Mumford & Sons, Imagine Dragons, the Jonas Brothers, Swedish House Mafia, the Lumineers, and Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.

"Gangnam Style" singer PSY will co-host the awards in Toronto on June 16,  while Lovato, One Direction, Pink, Carly Rae Jepsen, Swift and Justin Bieber have all signed up to perform.
