Chinese dissident Ai Weiwei debuts new video and song
Artist and dissident Ai Weiwei has released an expletive-laden new music video attacking the Chinese lawmakers who put him behind bars. In the lyrics of the heavy metal track, titled Dumb**s, angry Ai Weiwei recalls his 81-day detention in 2011, while the video, shot by Australian filmmaker Christopher Doyle, features a mock-up of his jail cell and revisits his time behind bars, surrounded by corrupt prison guards. Many of the lyrics are unfit to print, but one line translates as: "Stand on the frontline like a dumb**s, in a country that puts out like a hooker... tolerance be damned, to hell with manners, the low-life's invincible." Ai Weiwei has dedicated the track and the accompanying promo to "all those people who do not have the opportunity to raise their voice". He tells the BBC, "In the past 60 years there have been innumerable amounts of people who have been killed or sent away from their homes, even tortured to death." The startling video ends with Ai Weiwei shaving his head and donning women's clothing and heavy make-up. He claims writing and recording the song and filming the video was a form of therapy for him and now the 55 year old is planning to release a hard rock album later this year (13). The song and video have already been banned in China.
