Garth Brooks excited to join George Strait on ACMs
By CHRIS TALBOTT, AP Music Writer

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Garth Brooks says he's never seen anything like the reaction he's gotten since it was announced he will share the stage with George Strait for the first time Sunday during the Academy of Country Music Awards.

Bing: Remember when Brooks had an alter-ego?

Brooks and his early musical hero will be singing together for the first time and paying tribute to the show's late executive producer Dick Clark.

"Everywhere I go, restaurants, stores, whatever — 'Hey, you're gonna be singing with George. Hey, we can't wait to see you with George,'" Brooks said in a phone interview. "It's so cool. It's like getting to sing with someone that's attained a level that you only get if you die. They love him and worship him and I'm in line with everybody else."

The show airs live at 8 p.m. EDT Sunday from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas with Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan hosting. The show also will include appearances by top nominees Eric Church and Hunter Hayes, who's performing with Stevie Wonder, Jason Aldean, Carrie Underwood, Kenny Chesney and Miranda Lambert.

Brooks has often said he wanted to be just like Strait when he first picked up a guitar and a cowboy hat and started playing for tips while in college in Oklahoma. He demurred when asked what the two will perform, but said he believed it will be remembered as a special moment for a special man.

Clark began producing the ACMs in 1979 and was involved until his death last April. The show continues to be run by dick clark productions and Clark's son, Rac, serves as executive producer.

Brooks said he admired Clark for his down to earth and personal approach when it came to artists. When Clark had an idea or wanted to talk over an appearance, he would pick up the phone and call a performer directly. He wouldn't use a middle man. He thinks renaming the academy's artist of the decade award in Clark's honor was appropriate and in line with the legendary status of previous winners, who include Brooks, Strait, Loretta Lynn, Alabama and Marty Robbins.

"Those are all the cream of the crop and that's what Dick Clark meant," Brooks said.

Don't know why Kenny Chesney wasn't nominated for entertainer of the year...didn't he sell out the biggest concerts for 2012???!?!?!?!?!??!. Would love to have seen him win as his hard work & dedication to the profession is by far the best that there is....

Our yougest son ( who passed away in Dec 2010 at the age of 21) was a die hard Garth fan from the time he could talk. He could sing Garths' songs and preform each of the movements Garth did during the songs. Most kids watched cartoons..our Drew watched recorded Garth performances...lol  We took him to a Garth concert in Atlanta. He entertained the people around us with his "Garth" performance ( he was in kindergarten at the time of the concert)...he had a blast!  It was a blessing that he was able to go to the concert (this was years before we knew he even sick)and see Garth perform. We had alway promised if Garth came close by we would take him to one of his concerts. We are so happy we made that happen. Even when his buddies started listening to other music Drew stuck with Garth (even his alter ego Chris Gaines...which Drew had no problem with..its like he understood where Garth was going with that character).
At his memorial we had pictures of Drew showing from birth to the last pictures he had made at a friends wedding that June...and we picked a couple of his favorite Garth songs to play during that montage. Just as he would have wanted it....he fought the good fight.
So, Garth, I wish you the best. Just know you have an Angel looking down on you Sunday night.

As the new, younger Country performers come along, the older ones move on   I miss Garth a lot -- I still play his CDs once in awhile (I have them all) and enjoy them.  I'll be watching.
