Paul McCartney has lost track of Grammy wins

Sir Paul McCartney has lost track of how many Grammys he has in his trophy cabinet, and was surprised to learn his win on Sunday marked his 17th victory at the ceremony.

Bing: McCartney picks up another Grammy

The Beatles legend scooped the Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album prize for "Kisses on the Bottom," his first Grammy for new material since his days in the Fab Four. McCartney, who watched the broadcast on TV from home, now admits it was a pleasant surprise to discover he has so many Grammys to his name.

"It came as a big shock to me to know there were 17, to tell you the truth," he told BBC 6 Music. "I don't keep count, I suppose that's somewhat flash -- people know my figures better than I do. I don't think a lot of the best musicians in the world got Grammys, it only goes to select few, and so to be one of those for the 17th time is phenomenal."

The music icon also revealed the secret behind his multiple Grammy wins is not attending the ceremony.

"We were watching it on telly, it was like 'Oh yeah!' You can imagine the room went wild," he said. "The only way to win one is to not go. The minute you go and you're sitting in the audience it'll be, 'And the winner is ... John Mayer,' and you do that face, and you smile and clap and go, 'How good humored am I?'"
