Barry Manilow stunned by street honour
Veteran crooner Barry Manilow was "absolutely floored" when he discovered New York officials were planning to name a street after him, hailing it as the "biggest honour" he has ever received. The Mandy hitmaker is headlining a series of Broadway shows at the St. James Theatre, and in recognition of the residency, a street corner in Midtown Manhattan is being branded Barry Manilow Way. The renaming will become official on Tuesday (22Jan13), and Manilow admits he is overwhelmed by the tribute. He tells the New York Daily News, "When I found out they were going to be naming a street after me, I was absolutely floored. I flipped out and it's probably the biggest honour I've ever had." Speaking about his decision to stage his Manilow on Broadway shows, the 69 year old adds, "At first, I was like, 'I've done this twice already,' but then I remembered how much I loved it and I got the itch to do it again just one more time before I croak." The residency began on Friday (18Jan13) and runs until 23 February (13).
