The Beatles and Elvis Presley fans warned over faked autographs
Fans of Elvis Presley and The Beatles have been warned to be extra vigilant when buying signed memorabilia as the two acts have topped a list of the most forged autographs of 2012. Presley and the Fab Four top the list compiled by officials at American memorabilia authenticators PSA/DNA, who evaluate millions of signatures on sports and entertainment goods. The King's autograph, which can sell for thousands of dollars to collectors, was named the most-faked historical/entertainment signature of 2012, ahead of The Beatles in second place. Astronaut Neil Armstrong came third and assassinated American president John F. Kennedy was in fourth ahead of the late King of Pop Michael Jackson, who rounds out the top five. A statement from the organisation reads, "The King of Rock and Roll leads our non-sports list in 2012, for the second time in three years. Passing away at only 42 years of age in 1977, the amount of authentic autographs is extremely limited. Elvis' popularity is global... Large numbers of forgeries can be found in Europe, not just the United States... The Beatles... are, quite simply, the most heavily forged band in the autograph world... (John) Lennon's early passing, at the age of 40 in 1980, also contributes to the low number of complete, authentic examples of this mega-popular hit machine." In the organisation's list of most regularly faked sports autographs, baseball legend Babe Ruth leads the way, ahead of another star of the sport, Lou Gehrig, in second.
