The Mayan calendar came to a close on 12/21/2012, the conclusion of a 5,125-year cycle. Coincidentally, we've been waiting approximately that long for My Bloody Valentine to deliver the follow-up to "Loveless," and "whammo," just as the Mayans predicted (and MBV reported on their Facebook page):
"On 21-12-12 we finished mastering the new album!"
As you may have seen, we had MBV in the top spot of our list of the 50 Most Anticipated Albums Of 2013, and some of you had the (totally understandable) audacity to scoff at that choice. But who's laughing now, eh? Unless Shields schools us all and drops the thing in 2012, as he promised he would do, at which point you can come back and watch me eat some crow. But I'll be dining with a new My Bloody Valentine album on the stereo and no apocalypse in sight. Bring strawberry wine; we'll make a night of it.
