One Direction named MTV's 2012 Artist of the Year

NEW YORK (AP) -- They're platinum. They're fascinating. And now One Direction is MTV's 2012 Artist of the Year.

MTV says the fivesome is "the clear choice for the top spot" after a year that included two No. 1 albums, hits such as "What Makes You Beautiful" and a sold-out world tour.

One Direction's Louis Tomlinson calls Thursday's honor "the icing on the cake."

MTV's team of music staffers chose Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" as song as the year.

One Direction placed third on the U.K. version of "The X Factor" in 2010 and made their U.S. debut in March with the No. 1 album "Up All Night." Their sophomore album, "Take Me Home," was the year's third-highest debut.

The group also made Barbara Walters' most fascinating people of 2012 list.

I'm sure if someone offered any one of you the deal that these kids got you would all jump on it.  Why are people so mean and critical?  These boys are just doing what they are being PAID to do and they are doing it well.  I just can't stand people that always feel the need to insult, make fun and put down other people just to make themselves feel better.  Please don't call them talentless because it's simply not true!  They have quite a talent for making money now don't they!  If you don't like that kind of music that's fine you don't have to listen to it but please don't put down the children that do like this group because it's just plain mean.

Terrible music for teens with NO taste. The excuse is NOT that they're teens. I never liked this type of garbage as a teen. Pop music sucks!!!

Thanks MTV. I appreciate it. You, along with reality tv, have reminded me just why I don't have cable. Can't believe untalented people like this teeny bopper computer enhanced band won artist of the year. Artists like one direction, beiber, and nikki minaj should not be given any award of any kind. Doesn't really matter what MTV thinks though. When was the last time MTV focused anything on music? It's been years. Jersey Shore and teen mom are all that stupid channel is anymore. You know who I respect most? Psy. Yup. At least he doesn't pretend to be serious. He's just going out there and making the same "crap" the rest of these trash artists are making. So many singers, rappers, and bands. Not enough musicians anymore...

These young men are very entertaining and have worked very hard.  Let me see one of you negative comment makers go achieve what they are achieving and then maybe i'll take your negativity into consideration.  It's quite obvious that all of you men that are writing negative comments about this band are not from the generation that is listening to this music so why don't you just stick with your Van Halen (who I could care less about) and your Kurt Cobain (suicidal drug addict) and let these young men have their moment in the spotlight.  Just for the record my children are crazy about this band and I find their songs quite entertaining.
