Stevie Wonder cancels concert for Israeli group

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Stevie Wonder is calling off a concert for a group that raises money for the Israeli military.

Wonder had been scheduled to perform Dec. 6 for Friends of the Israel Defense Forces, which raises money for Israeli soldiers and their families.

Bing: What's Stevie Wonder's real name?

Wonder said the United Nations recommended canceling his performance because he is an official "Messenger of Peace" for the organization. The United Nations overwhelmingly voted to recognize a Palestinian state on Thursday over vehement U.S. and Israeli objections as hopes for Mideast peace talks stalled.

Wonder said in a statement he was canceling with a heavy heart but that "I am and have always been against war, any war, anywhere."

Several petitions had called on Wonder to cancel the performance.

The concert was to raise money for the soldiers and their families who at the end of the day are sacrifices of war.  This was a political push on the UN's part and unfortunately he was too blind to see it. Sorry, really politically incorrect but I couldn't resist.

Amazing (or depressing) how a story like this can bring the 8th grade eductation of of those compelled to post. 1 person who agrees with Stevie Wonder and myself uses the same statement to denegrate Jews, of which I am one. And for those of you who want to cast all of the Palestinians as the handy bad guys, try picking up a book, like Exodus or The Haj by Leon Uris. The Palestinians were forced into segregation, sprawliing tent cities with open sewage as soon as Israel began re-settlement after WWII. Try walking in the someone elses shoes before you just blog out your prejudices.

What a lack of backbone and class. The U.N, is one of the most corrupt organozations on Earth. Wonder could have done a great job by going on with the concert and advocating peace.

How sad that he is just another entertainer with no real courage.

Is it the role of a "UN Messenger of Peace" to cave in to the threats of arab extremists?
How about being a part of an international organization that funnels millions of dollars to terrorist groups - all in the name of "Peace", of course...?
