L.A. alt weekly L.A. Weekly, who is known to put together some of these "Worst ... Ever" lists, piled together their 20 Worst Hipster Bands countdown. Their thesis:

"On its surface hipsterdom seems to be an individuality-grab, but most of today's 20 and 30-something bands from Silver Lake and Williamsburg sound shockingly similar. They're all playing variations of retro garage and soul music -- or bringing glockenspiels and choirs on incestuous nationwide tours -- all the while clad in vintage garb likely infested with lice. We're not saying that they should be outlawed by, like, Congress or something. Just that they should be avoided."

I love these types of 'worst' music lists. It invaribly gives me a number of new groups that are very talented and who I enjoy. critcs are hilarious. Can't do jack spit in the field of thier supposed 'expertise' except whine about how bad others are who can. lol

*are

I was originally going to say Coldplay, but I added Maroon 5 as well and forgot to change "is" to "are".

Okay... Now I'm completely baffled. What makes these bands "hipster"? Casual clothes? Names that sound like something an art school student would find clever?  I live in a hipster neighborhood - I know this because it's written up as such, internationally (???), and when people find out where I live, they get really odd and sniff "Oh! So you're a hipster!" Alternately, "That explains the black clothing!" and/or "I guess I'm not cool enough for you, then!"  What drives me nuts are the ongoing "hipster hat" comments. I was really hoping to see a photo of said hat or any unusual garb/look that mildly resembled my neighbors. Some have facial hair like this guy, but they're bears. You seem like a smart group. Can someone please tell me what makes these bands hipster & what a freaking "hipster hat" is? I keep looking for them, but all I see (even now that it's cold and raining), are the wool caps. Thanks.
