According to a post in CityPages.com, Smoot died of unknown causes sometime between the end of Wednesday night's show at First Avenue in Minneapolis and when his bandmates attempted to wake him to cross the border into Canada Thursday morning.

Smoot has been a member of GWAR since 2002.

In a statement, GWAR's Dave Brockie wrote: "It is with a sense of profound loss and tragedy that the members of GWAR must announce the passing of their long time guitarist and beloved friend Cory Smoot, also known to thousands of metal fans worldwide as Flattus Maximus. Cory was found deceased this morning as the band prepared for a border crossing. There is no word as to the cause of death and the members of GWAR are completely shocked and devastated that this has occurred. At this point there is no word on arrangements and the disposition of the remainder of GWAR's current North American tour, nor are there any details regarding long term plans. At this point we are just dealing with the loss of our dear friend and brother, one of the most talented guitar players in metal today. We ask that our fans and the media be respectful of our request for privacy for those that have suffered this terrible loss. A full statement will be coming in the next day or so, in the meantime please give your thoughts and your prayers to Cory, his family, and all the people that love him."

Nate Kranz, the general manager of First Avenue, told City Pages: "There was nothing unusual about the show last [Wednesday] night, it was about as normal as you can get. Conrad [Sverkerson, First Ave's longtime stage manager], their drummer, and their tour manager went and had one drink at O'Donovans after the show, and then they got on their tour bus, we let them out of the garage, and sent them on their way."

I was at the GWAR show in Milwaukee WI not long before he died. I actually had the pleasure of talking to the man again that night. He was one of the warmest and most sincere people you could ever hope to know so please people leave us alone to mourn the loss of one of our fallen.............Cory Smoot was one hell of a guitarist and the best damn Scum Dog Of The Universe that the world has ever known!

Cory, his family, fans, and bandmates deserve to be treated with respect during this death. Even if you dont understand who he was or what he stood for in life that doesnt give you the right to spew your religious hate and hurt the people who knew and loved him. Be a true christian and go back to reading your bibles and singing Psalms till your blue in the face.......While we rock out to Bring Back the Bomb!

RIP Cory Smoot you will forever be remembered by your fans, friends and family and we will be forever thankful that we were able to share in your tragically short life. My heart goes out to his family, wife jamie, the members of GWAR, The Fans and anyone else who was touched by this great man.

I am a Christian, former youth pastor, ordained minister, and someone who loves metal music-Christian based or not, and yes, I love Gwar. I want to apologize for all the others who claim Christ preach hate on here and in the world. You are the ones who should be ashamed-Christ called us to love, not hate! Cory Smoot was an amazing guitarist, and his family, friends and fans are mourning the loss of his life and talent-which was given to him by God. It is not time for us to come in and start saying all kinds of hateful things, but to be respectful and show love. I am sorry to all who were offeneded by the other Christians....some people don't understand what we're supposed to be. Cory-you will be missed man!

To The Religious People -
Shut the **** up and go back to church where you belong because you're too damn judgemental to be allowed internet access. You people always feel the need state your damn opinions everywhere, and in all honesty no one gives a **** what you have to say you hypocritical ****. You don't have the right to judge anyone, open up your ****ing minds a little bit and read your bible 1 more time til you find the *thou shall love thy neighbor* **** and drill it into your ****ing brain so you finally learn how to accept people for who they are. Goddamn.

Why all the anger from you satan worshippers??? there is no middle ground ...either you worship God or your allegiance is to satan ,and in true satanic fashion your anger boils over when your sinful lives are laid before you,Is guilt getting to you??just like the enraged killed Jesus because he exposed their sinfullness,so satans followers would and will do today if allowed to.Obviously this guy is happy to be with satan ,he lived his life as such and made no secret about it,at the same time he led others away from their true creator with his demonic  twisted rotten filthy good for nothing hell on earth vision of grandeur.,now he can witness the violence he so loved while alive on earth, why would that enrage his followers???

The Bible says in Psalm 9:17 "The wicked shall be turned into hell..." This man is not ruling or will he ever rule over any body or for that matter over any people. He is currently experiencing what the book of Jude calls the "blackness of darkness forever..." He is alone, suffering, weeping and gnashing his teeth. Awaiting that final day of judgement which is talked about in the book of Revelation, the great white throne judgement.
