Dance music didn't have its own category at the Grammys until 2003, and now the little genre that could appears to have been fully embraced by the Recording Academy. The 2012 Grammy Awards will include "a special segment spotlighting dance/electornica music for the first time ever." The lineup for this special performance?: Deadmau5, David Guetta, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne and the Foo Fighters. Wait, what?
Bing: Grammy dance music nominees
During
the awards show, the five artists will perform in a tent outside the Staples
Center in front of a crowd of 1,000. Grammy show producer Ken Ehrlich describes
the performance as the "most ambitious number that we've ever done outside the
Staples Center."
He continues: "My feeling about dance is it's such
an immersive experience for the participant, that to put it on stage ... where
the audience is not a part of it ... I don't know, honestly, until we came up
with the idea of doing it this way, I don't know if it ever would have
worked."

As PopDust points out, the Foo Fighters aren't so
random when you consider that Deadmau5 remixed their song "Rope," and Breezy and
Weezy's involvement comes from their guest appearances on Guetta's "I Can Only
Imagine."
But if the point of this performance is to spotlight
dance/electro music, why not exclusively feature dance artists, or at least
highlight more than two? Show some love for the other dance nominees, which
include Robyn, Duck Sauce, Cut/Copy, Swedish House Mafia
and Skrillex — who is also a Best New Artist
nominee, as well as the inspiration behind a whole new trendy hairstyle.
