It did *not* prepare me for Yankee Hotel Foxtrot (YHF). On first listen, YHF seemed a bit weak - after a few more spins, I fell in love. I listened to this CD aprox. 20 times over a two week period (I like to listen to music while I program C++ :). With the exception of song 4, the album is extremely creative, melodic, and ambituous (what is that hippie-ish 70's garage band garbage?). Wilco is a band that knows how to use disonance to great effect (see track 3). Lyrically, I feel Tweedy leaves just enough vagueness in his words so that the listener can easily relate them to something personal, but not enough so that they obviously have no cohesion and meaning (vis a vis Red Hot Chilli Pepper's By The Way - Great Album, TERRIBLE lyrics :).
Anyway, if you enjoyed the Flaming Lips' Yoshimi or Soft Bulletin, or you just love richly textured, creative, pretty, melodic music, buy this album (and listen to it three+ times before judging!!!).

Boo yA! Sure, Summer Teeth and Being There are fun and poppy, but I suggest opening your ears and souls and truley appreciating the genius behing this album. " Poor Places" has to be my favorite - of course along with "Jesus, etc."- but try to listen to "Kamera" and understand. Wilco performs these songs beautifully live and I cannot wait for their new album to come out. Was this review helpful? While there are memorable moments, I must say that this album pales in comparison to Summer Teeth, an album that there are not enough stars to rate it with. Tweedy's writing seems to become more and more obscure, which is fine by me. I felt the post-9-11 vibe all throughout, but as always, was left wistful yet not depressed. Wilco is an American treasure that commercialism seems to ignore, they've remained true to their roots while advancing the sound. Every album makes me want the next album even more, the sign of a true ";difference-making"; band. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Posted: 1/1/2003A review of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot by Anonymous The first time I heard Sun Volt (think 2 very influential, seminal labels of '50's & '60's vintage respectfully)at a New Music Seminar for $275. a pop (Mariott Marquis', Midtown Manhatten)covering as Senior Editor for Philly Rock Guide (Rockpile) I knew it, I liked 'em. Jeff Tweedy & co. went and got themselves the alt/country badge o' courage along with a name change (enter Wilco, Rodger that...)in the fine tradition of Jason & the Nashville Scorchers, The True Believers and way too many others to name check in 2000 characters, max. So I missed Sun Volt and moistened my angst when radio year in, year out played the great new stuff (";Summer Teeth";, ";A.M.";) while systemically pretending that their earlier stuff just wasn't k-u-h-l, man. Persona non potato au groto, comprende? Just get their compilation & I'll slither away quietly...Well, ";Y.F.H."; is just fine, has some nice psycho production effects, strong melodies & I love more than a few of the titles and it genuinely belongs as a top 20 of 2002. But #4? Huh? What can I say, there's a lotta Wilco fans here and/or vote early, vote often. So make your New Year's reservations now. Sorry, no PM discounts apply...PM Was this review helpful? I read a lot of album reviews on Pitchfork and usually disagree -- this time though, I fully agree...Complex and dangerously catchy, lyrically sophisticated and provocative, noisy and somehow serene, Wilco's aging new album is simply a masterpiece Was this review helpful?
