1969 man lands on the moon then after that, nothing really happened for a while...then along came U2 in 1991...BAM...Achtung Baby. as far as U2 albums go, its about as far as you can get from the U2 sound without straying too far so as to sound terrible coughpopcough. it is safe to say though, as in al their masterpieces (e.g. Achtung Baby, Joshua Tree, and All That You Cant Leave Behind) Edge is the cement on this street paved with gold. his excellent axe-weilding skilld combined with some new effects U2 usually doesnt work with laid the foundation for this album. he owned, nuff said. like every album ever made there are some low points, but an you point out a song on which his guitar skills dont shine like a nosebleed sunrise? either you are sitting there realizing he is one of the greatest guitarists of our day or you arent good with music so stop reading...NOW...anyways...this albums got it all...rarely-seen heavy distortion, rocking songs such as Zoo Station and The Fly to name the foremost, plus some melodic ballads like One, Whos Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses?, and Ultraviolet (Light My Way), plus everything in between, with jewels like Mysterious Ways, Even Better Than The Real Thing, and Acrobat. its the total package, leaving nothing to be desired. and we all know Edge cant do it on his own, and Bono clearly demonstrates his amazing range and vocal ability, while the job of laying down the rythem of the beat and keeping it there is well taken care of by both Larry Mullen Jr. and Adam Clayton. this ones a must have

This is by far U2's best effort. From Zoo Station's post-modern confusion, to the "end of the world's" sorrow, to the love forgiving "wild horses" and with the finality of the "fly" and Edge's best solo. For me, growing up, this album defined a generation. Everytime I hear a song on the radio, or play the cd, it congers up feelings from far ago. U2 was definitely at their peak at this album, and as later efferts demonstrate, they could never recaputre the output.

Few albums have gripped me the way that this does. Airplay in the early nineties belied the real strength of this album. You would have had to be hidden in a cave to not hear "One" or "Mysterious Ways" on the radio or MTV, and though they are decent pop fluff, they do not have the soul of the deeper tracks. Bono and The Edge crawl outside of their political angst and assail your senses with a fury of guitars and strong soulful vocals. Sure, by the second half you might be craving a dose of Prozac, but the experience is well worth it. After all, music is art, and isn't art supposed to evoke feeling? Do yourself a favor and don't skip to the hits, listen to the whole album and let the music work its magic.

I know that it's hard to believe that this could beat The Joshua Tree but just hear me out. Achtung Baby completely reinvented U2 to become the Legends of the 90's not just the Sepia Tinted great band from the late 80's.If you listen to the last song from Rattle and Hum ,(the previous album to Achtung Baby,) All I Want Is You Then the first track from Achtung, Zoo Station you feel that this band has taken a 180 degree turn. The Joshua Tree was recorded in a desert house in America. Achtung Baby in a studio in Berlin (freshly after the fall of the Berlin wall). Where as the Joshua Tree's main theme was the Desert and the essence of America, Achtung Baby's theme is self hated and black beauty (vented especially well in 'Love Is Blindness').This album has many classic songs worthy to sit proudly in any best of. Songs like Mysterious ways, The Fly, Until the end of the world are all classics and made great live songs for the greatest tour the world has ever seen ZOO TV which promoted this Album, and became recognised as the biggest, best and most ambitious ever. But the jewel in the crown of this masterpiece is One perhaps the greatest song ever. A song about Loss and Fellowship, with the most beautiful Aria ever heard in a rock song in the closing seconds. Some call it "the break up song so flawless it stopped U2 from breaking up". Once again U2 proved, that for the first time since the beatles, the Biggest band in the world could also be the best. So Forget Radiohead, REM or U2-LITE (Coldplay)none of them have made a song capable of matching One ...never mind an album matching Achtung Baby. So please listen. (And enjoy a personal favourite, Acrobat.)

I agree with the person who says that this is U2's best album. The Joshua Tree is their biggest and one of their best. This is their best because of it's imagination and honesty. When U2 decided on a follow-up to Joshua Tree, they knew they couldn't do a sequel to this epic soundscape. And they didn't. Instead they gave us an album so different it was hard to believe we were actually listening to U2. On the opening Zoo Station, Bono's voice is barely recognizable. Every song is brilliant but the real standout is One. In a 2003 poll of the best 1000 songs ever, Q put this song at, no surprise, no. 1. It's hard to decide which album is better, Joshua Tree or Achtung Baby? They can't really be compared despite being both from the same band. Comparing JT to AB is like comparing a black and white TV to a colour TV. If you can't get enough of U2's 80's sound and get this album expecting a follow up to Joshua Tree, you'll be sorely disappointed. If, however, you appreciate good music and forget that this is the U2 you used to love, the rewards are enormous.

While some of the songs arent as strong as others, the good ones are amazing, and if someone asked me what song I wish I wrote, It has to be 'One'. What a song. A great album, easily worth your money. So get it!

i gave this album 4 stars because it was a good album, but not good enough. it was completely different than there music from the 80's. anyway, it is a great album for the early 90's. the only "normal" U2 song on this album in my opinion is ''one'' only because of the sound of the music. in ''one'', the sound sounds like a normal U2 song unlike ''mofo'' or ''zoo station'' in witch the music in those songs sound futuristic.that is who u2 wanted this album to be. a new decade,a new sound of music for the ''new'' U2 in the 90's. ACHTUNG BABY is a good album, but i would suggest ''all that you can't leave behind'' a little more!

U2 is the most overrated band in the world... their sound alone makes ones ears bleed profusely!! How could anyone like Bono's voice? Makes me not want to trust people... that have problems hearing. The only question is which album is sh*ttier, Achtung or Joshua Tree? Hey, who can decide?!

U2... Leaving there 80's ballast. What on earth can you do when you have made a record like TJT ??? You get in a struggle, a fight and having arguments about musical directions and the image of the band. Breaking up is appearing at the horizon like a sunrise. And then something brilliant like Achtung Baby comes out of the magicians hat. This is there greatest album... first because of it's quality, second because of it's experimental nature..and thirdly because it's right after TJT which was concidered not to be topped ever.... but they pulled it off. With this record they made them selves a pathway to do what ever they feel like for future albums.... My favo.... Untill the end of the world. (but if i start to listen to the album it's still hard to pick a favo!!!)

When I first listened to this album, I wasn't sure what to think. It was so different from anything else U2 has ever released. By the third listen though, I was convinced that this is their best album by far and maybe one of the best albums ever released by anybody. Every song is a classic and they could have released a video and a single for all of them. The album starts off fast, with 'Zoo Station' and 'Even Better Than the Real Thing'. It slows down briefly for one of the greatest songs ever written, 'One'. It picks right back up though for 'Until the End of the World' and 'Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses'. The rest of the album, to me is key. Most albums that I have heard, start strong but then finish weak. This album continues strong with 'So Cruel', 'The Fly', 'Mysterious Ways', and 'Tryin to Throw Your Arms Around the World', and follows those classics up with my personal favorite, 'Ultravoilet (Light My Way)'. This song to me, has always been one of their most underrated songs and I really wish they would play it live more. To me it's one of the most upbeat, love rock songs ever put out and if I ever get married, I want it played at my wedding. A strong ending is always important for any album and Achtung Baby finishes beautifully with the motivating 'Acrobat' and 'Love Is Blindness'. One of the things that drew me to U2 was the combination of positive emotion and swagger that they put into their albums and they did it perfectly with Achtung Baby. Chances are, if your a big time U2 fan like I am, you already have this album. If not, you better get it because you are missing out!
