I recognize the phenomenally talented and gifted person she is, the brilliance of her music and when she performs how she and the piano cease to be two separate entities, but I dont compare her to Nostradamus. Many writers are cryptic, that doesnt mean everything they have to say is prolific or earth shattering. Were lucky to be let into her world and I cant downplay her importance, but certainly there are things that she shares that only she in meant to understand. I saw her in concert on the Boys For Pele tour and Im still in awe to this day. Maybe her music doesnt reach me as deeply as it does others, but that doesnt mean I cant or dont appreciate her or that Im not intelligent or on the same cosmic plane as the rest of her fans. I was once told that because I never got into Woody Allen films was because you just dont understand him. Thats always the argument that fans of any particular artist use to defend their works. Luckily, Tori Amos is able to reach all of us on different levels and therein lies her true genius. Even in this first release (please stay far away from the abysmal Y KANT TORI READ) I was so moved by how she can reach into a place where few of us are even afraid to go, especially on her first outing. Everytime we think great she blows us away with something even better than the last attempt. If your not hooked on tori, then your really not listening to her lyrics at all. And the hypnotic piano playing is enough to turn marble into cotton condy. I can't wait to hear her next project! Tori I love your spirit! Was this review helpful? This collection is amazing thanks in large part to songs like "Crucify", "Little Earthquakes", "Me And A Gun", "Precious Things", and "Silent All These Years". It offers a release for emotions that are other wise repressed. The sorrowing "Me And A Gun", a song about rape, will send shivers down your spine. This album is ultimatly pure genius and a wonderful work of art. Was this review helpful? Definately a cd to put in and relax, or take a candle light bath with. Was this review helpful? This album is an in between of her thunderous writings. She sings as if she is in my mind. Her voice is like an angel and her passion is that of an artist. Thank you Tori, for your inspiration guides me to the band in the road. Was this review helpful? I absolutely loved it! It shows Tori at her best. Listening to the depth and beauty of this album helped me get through a tough time in my life, especially ";Crucify"; and ";Little Earthquakes."; Was this review helpful? Strangled by my own life, I wandered with no hope and no destinctive energy to live. I then discovered a woman of many words who new me... the deeper part of me, the part where no person have ever been. And after listening to Mother and China and Tears in Your Hand a few hundred times I realized the okeyness in feeling hurt by people and the okeyness in not understanding people or why or how they hurt one so bad. TORI is really my idol when it comes to music. I strongly recommend it to any one who would like to understand themselves and others better. Was this review helpful? The best Tori album in my opinion.
What sets this album apart from her others is the accessibility. Her other albums, particularly 'Boys For Pele', lack accessibility. Over the years her lyrics became impenetrable. Listeners would have to dedicate themselves to discovering the meanings.
On "Earthquakes", she is straightfoward. That straightfowardness is often startling.
The stark production and instrumentation brings to mind a vacant room. Wondering what's in the silences is what brings power to the album.
The standout tracks for me are "Girl", "Precious Things", "Happy Phantom", and "Me and a Gun".
The album set a precedent for the inevitable onslaught of singer/songwriters, but few would reach the level that Ms. Amos reached with "Little Earthquakes". Hours of listening to the same songs endlessly was the best outlet I could have discovered. Thanks, Tori for giving me the words when I coulnd not find them. Was this review helpful? And it's her debut. Boy, i didn't know what i was missing. This is one of the best debut albums i have ever heard. It's so raw with emotion, and all of the songs are good. Compared to Amos' latest works it sounds very dated, but that only adds to the effect: this album is a classic. Was this review helpful? Each song has its own individual appeal. Me and a Gun has a special place in the hearts of many Toriphiles. Tori is a goddess! I still cannot stop listening to it after 11 years.
