This cd is a r&b classic and a must have for all smooth r&b listeners. Every minute of this album is worth listening to and it is full of continious moments of feeling like you ought to lay back in a bathtub and light some candles. Enjoy every minute of this because they don't make good R&B like this anymore. Was this review helpful? This, her first full-length LP, is an excellent debut album and one of my favorite R&B CDs. Toni's voice, at times low and sultry, at other times belting out beautiful high notes, has amazing range, which she demonstrates on this album. Babyface, whom I consider simply the best R&B producer out there, has left signs of his handiwork throughout the CD, particularly the romantic (and often melancholy) ballads for which Toni is best known.
The reason this album isn't as impressive as her best, "Secrets," is not Toni's voice but the lyrics in her songs. Lyrically, the beginning of the CD in "Another Sad Love Song" and "Breathe Again" are sad, moving pieces that represent some of Toni's best songs to date. the middle of the album is a little weak in this regard, particulary "Seven Whole Days" (my least favorite song on the album) and "Candlelight." She finishes strong, however, with songs like "How Many Ways" and "You Mean the World to Me," a song that has become characteristic of Toni's style: powerful, almost hypnotic reprises that touch the heart and please the ear.
I actually heard of few of the songs on this album first in other venues like the movie Boomerang, where Toni's first release "Love Shoulda Brought You Home" back in 1992. Not knowing it was her, I was elated to find she had made such a wonderful album in addition to the tracks I had already heard. Toni's style is soothing yet sad, dillusioned but full of pride. She is a strong female role model and unafriad of her sexuality on this and other albums.
If you are looking for an amazing artist with a beautiful voice, Toni Braxton is your woman. Buy this album and discover the beginning of her impressive and successful career in R&B. In my opinion, no one in the mainstream does it better. Was this review helpful? It too got me through some of what i thought was the worst days of my life. I would in closing just like to thank her for continuing to make music for me to listen to. i think she is one of the most talented female artists out there and i wish her all thee best.
