Long time WHO fans can simply point out, that the My Generation album does not sound like Tommy, Tommy sounds nothing like Quadrophenia, nor does Odds and Sods sound like Face Dances. Does the Beatles Please Please Me sound like Abbey Road? Of course not. So quit looking for that, and focus on the album at hand, 24 years down the road from Its Hard, and btw Whos Next is over 30 years old, OK?
Reviewing the album with THAT out of the way, this is a GREAT return for the WHO. As it is, this album DOES have some of that magic of old WHO, as stated Fragments does borrow from Baba ORiley on the synth riff, but remember that some of the ideas for songs go back to the Lifehouse music (which created Whos Next), acoustic ballads by Pete and Roger (see Sunrise on Sell Out) or for loud WHO look at Its Not Enough or Black Widows Eyes on the new album. Its all here and all good. But as groups grow and age, youll find Daltrey is STILL in fine form for 62 (do you know of anyone who does a better rnr scream with authority). Petes instantly recognizable guitar sound is present throughout. And Zak,Pino,Simon, and John Bundrick make a great musical form for the Who II to play on.
Just take my advice and buy the cd, you wont go wrong. (and if you think I am a fan, you bet your sweet soul, that I am, and proud of it.) Was this review helpful? Unfortuneatly it is not the brilliant music found in Baba Oreilly, Behind Blue Eyes, Pinball Wizard, etc. A little too much reflection and not enough guts. Was this review helpful?
