When you produce a superhuman effort (like Soundgarden's immediately preceding album, Superunknown), everyone expects you to constantly top yourself. There's typically no way to do this, and the media jumps on it all the time, claiming "sophmore album jinx", or some such trash. Soundgarden ingeniously found a way out of this trap, and the end result is Down On the Upside. While Superunknown is the album that introduced Soundgarden to mainstream audiences (it was full of eerie themes, dark vision and complicated hard rock timing & riffs; the stuff of legend), Down On The Upside is a sideways step for Soundgarden. This is more of a garage band album from a group that is miles above everyone else (in the same vein as Metallica's St. Anger album). Soundgarden kept the same thematic, lyrical & musical content, but purposely stepped back from their production level of Superunknown. It definitely works. From the first song to the last, each is very listenable, and challenging at the same time. This album also contains Burden In My Hand, argueablly Soundgarden's finest single. Great stuff from a band that still leaves a big shadow over the alternative - hard rock scene to this day.

AFter the death of Kurt grunge was in a slow decline. Integrity and art were bought sold and packed. Here in 1996 Soundgarden said Goobye. After over a decade of great music and finally becoming huge stadium monsters ..(superunknown) soundgarden gave it all the finger. Said goodbye. Left on a high while they could. Emotionally filled distrought tracks saying how the band related to their fame...to the death of kurt..and how grunge had begun to become a product. Songs such as "blow up the outside world" "burden in the hand" "zero chance" showed this was an emotionally drained introspective band...who'd reached the top of the mountain..and instead of staying kings..decided to fly onto pastures new...... Its not without reason I doubt that the band chose Ty Cobb as their final release with its chorus refrain of giving the finger.... "Nothing seems to kill me...no mater how hard I try....nothing is closing my eyes....nothing can beat you down for my pain or delight." "I must be pure and true I must contain my views There must be something else There must be something good Far away.............."

Coming off of their most successful album ever, Soundgarden obviously had a tough act to follow. So they didn't. Instead, they came up with "Down On The Upside", an album that is radically sonicly different from any of their previous works. With the excpetion of the song "Ty Cobb", this album is devoid of the screeching metal of "Badmotorfinger" and the psychedelic lyrics of "Superunknown". Rather, in this album Soundgarden produced a beautiful, almost organic sound that is far more accessible than any of their previous releases. There is enough of the old to satisfy the old fans ("Pretty Noose" lies along a similar vein to "The Day I Tried To Live" and "Hands All Over") but it is the new that is truly remarkable. This is a different, though equally good Soundgarden from the one that cut "FOPP" all those years ago. Well worth a listen, and a must have for any fans of the band.
