Mainly the twangy sound, second the self-absorbed, self-centered, self-indulgent self-pity. Yet here I find these George Jones type lyrics set to a punk sound. The effect is riveting. I have never heard anything quite like it, and sometimes I can't stop listening to it. ";Born to Lose"; is this album's best song but ";This time Darlin'"; is more country than country. Social Distortion's best song ";Ball and chain"; is on another album, but this is their best album. Beyond the obvious content of these songs lies a deeper question: Are they serious? Are these songs just about misery or are they a parody of songs about misery or even of self-pity itself? Only this group knows, but who cares? I am satisfied just to listen for hours...
