If you like this Sexsmith album, please make the effort to check out the rest as well. Haunting melodies, a beautiful voice, simple but effective arrangements: it's all there. Personally, I think his second full length album "Other Songs" is as good as "Cobblestone Runway". Listen to 'Thinking out loud', 'Pretty little cemetary' and 'Honest mistake' and decide for yourself. Ron Sexsmith is a gifted though underrated songwriter who deserves more attention. I actually pulled over to the side of the road to listen more closely after the first verse. It is one of the simplest and prettiest songs I've ever come across. Ballads of this sort don't usually register with me, but ";Hills"; hit me like a brick through my windshield. Sexsmith's straining voice against the assured tinkling of the piano forms a nice contrast. The rest of the CD, which I soon purchased, is strong with a couple tracks which struck me almost as forcefully ";Hills";, but in different ways. Sexsmith knows how to get under your skin with a melody, no question. At moments he sounds eerily like Paul McCartney, at other times like Paul Young -- and that's not a bad thing, considering there are very few original vocal stylists out there today. I mean, not everyone can be Tom Waits. So I'm going to dig a little deeper into the Sexsmith catalogue now and see if Cobblestone is just the tip of a lucrative vein or if there's only Fool's Gold in them grooves. One thing's for sure, though: ";Gold in Them Hills"; is a priceless gem. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1-3 of 3 Per Page |
