I bought Vitalogy mainly because of the previous releases and also the artwork (not always the best reason I know). Well, I only give the album three stars because the artwork warrants notching it up 2 stars. Sadly, I personally found the album tedious and boring compared to their other work(s). Actually, Ive lost interest in Pearl Jam altogether, but still enjoy some of their other releases from time to time. Ironically, the c.d. I really wanted ended up being traded-in and from the overflow of the used c.d. bin, alot of other people felt the same way I did. Was this review helpful? Last exit, spin the black circle, whipping, and satan's bed all rock the socks off, with with good humour in the case of the latter two, a weird off-kilter-ish rock in the first, and a mindless celebration of vinyl on the second song mentioned. Nothingman and better man are nice, introspective, slower songs about relationships gone wrong, and not for you, tremor christ, as well as corduroy are tuneful, mid-tempo songs. Pry to, bugs, aye davanita, and the last song are all for being odd without being substantial songs. The last song especially seems a waste of time, with the beatles' Revolution Number Nine already having covered this "but what really is the definition of music?" territory much better. The highlight of the album, has to be the dark, brittle immortality. Not sure what it's about really, as the lyrics are as cryptic as anywhere else on the album, though the song does present some nice imagery and a melodic fade-out. This was the penultimate track and really should have been the last one. Not as consistently a knock-out as Ten, this still finds Pearl Jam putting out some very good material that showed the band willing to experiment with their sound (thus foreshadowing No Code), albeit, with some unnecessary filler thrown into the mix. Lots of people hate the filler songs, but i think they make the album stronger as a wole when listened to all the way through
My totally biased opinion: 5 STARS!!

Sign In 2 out of 3 users found this helpful One of the best classic Pearl Jam albums, often overlooked, but has grown to be loved over the years. Most people will say they do not have it, or know it, but they do, as you play these songs, you say"Oh, yea, I love this song, mI forgot which album it wason..." or "I've only heard that song live, what album is it on?" Was this review helpful? Sign In 2 out of 5 users found this helpful Alot of people think that ";Ten"; is Pearl Jam's best album, but i think that ";Vitalogy"; is just as good if not better. It is one of those albums you can just put in and press play. It has some of their best written songs (ie Betterman and Nothingman) and it has a sound all its own. So vitalogy is a definite must have for any CD collection. Was this review helpful? Sign In 0 out of 0 users found this helpful Vitalogy is, without question, the best album from 1994, and the fact that NARAS did not recognize that at Grammy time is a crime against music itself. But Pearl Jam is not about awards and accolades. Pearl Jam is about great music and real life. From the driving opener Last Exit to the closing strains of Foxy Mama, this is their finest work to this point. Was this review helpful?
