But, the public like to believe that "Don't Speak" is about Gwen's previous relationship with Bassist Tony Kanal. But thats not true. They wrote the song about the band breaking up because thats what was going on in that time. People on th outside were trying to get them to break up and Gwen was getting a lot of attention while the other band members were not. So....DON'T SPEAK IS NOT ABOUT GWEN AND TONY IT IS ABOUT THE BAND BREAKING UP!! If you don't believe me go out and buy "The Videos" and in the video commentary with the band it says it all right there. Gwen and the guys says its about the band breaking up. In the Rock Steady album I really liked the whole album I think Gwen sounds wierd in this album she doesnt sound like that on Rock Steady or even now being on here own. So I really didnt like this album. Was this review helpful? There are no boring songs on this album and a lot of their greatest songs have come from this album, Sunday Morning, Just A Girl, Happy Now?, Different People, Tragic Kingdom and of course Don't Speak. I think Tragic Kingdom is No Doubt's best written song up to this date, the only song I can think that comes near it is New, other then that Tragic Kingdom's lyrics are superior to every other song's lyrics. Even though the follow-up, Return Of Saturn is more mature and better written, Tragic Kingdom has you in a great mood and jumping around. Their was nothing else like it when it came out and still nothing really similar has come out since.

Tragic Kingdom is unlike most No Doubt albums. The sound and feel of the album is true to their sun-shine California ska and third wave music. But Tragic Kingdom also offers songs like "Dont Speak" to a crowd of alternative listeners. This is a true album of talent. Was this review helpful? Anyway... Gwen rules until she sais not! Was this review helpful? Sign In 2 out of 3 users found this helpful Posted: 10/25/2003A review of Tragic Kingdom by SETHWITHAKAUER If ever there was a great album.....this would be one. From first to last its just a compilation of quirky off-the-wall music that can really lift you even in the worst of moods. Tragic Kingdom is the best track in my opinion as it really sounds very theme parkish and has a lack of seriousness that i find refreshing. Very few albums catch my interest as this one has. BUY IT!!IT WONT LEAVE YOUR CD PLAYER UNLESS IT IS TO BE IMMEDIATLY MOVED TO YOUR PORTABLE CD PLAYER Was this review helpful? This was before No Doubt became sellouts, before Gwen married Mr. Sellout himself, before any of that.
I remember when I first heard Don't Speak. I thought they were a dying cause that they couldn't get another hit in, but I decided to buy the album anyway. When I put it my CD player, it blew me away. I used to listen to it for hours. All the songs were written with such...thought and detail.
No Doubt is the reason I got into ska music. After that, I started to move into punk with NOFX, but that's another story for another day.
Anyways, if you feel the same way about No Doubt selling out, good that you can see it. I'm not really gonna go into details on why I think they sold out cause this is supposed to review their GOOD CD. It's definatly worth checking out if you don't have it in your CD collection already Was this review helpful?
