To Erlewine who tried to make it seem as if Kurt Co. were lost. In Utero is far from a suicide note, it is musical and lyrical genius. Serve the Servants is about the relationship Kurt never had with his father but instead the experience he endured with his dad. Scentless Apprentice is about the book Perfume by Patrick Suskind about a perfume maker-killer who cant smell. Rape Me is a poke at the medias harsh criticisms though some ppl think that Kurt is just being vile. Heart-Shaped Box is for Courtney. Courtney gave Kurt a heart-shaped valentine box containing some black tar heroin amongst other things. Forever in debt.is from a note Kurt gave Courtney. Frances Farmer. Kurt always loved the story of Frances Farmer. Frances was a movie star whose evil mother had her sent to a mental hospital. Get the book Will There Really Be A Morning by F. Farmer. Dumb, it doesnt mean he thinks hes stupid, its about the dull happiness he felt from heroin, that was his Dumb. Kurt wrote in notes how pot wrecked his memory nerves. It just wasnt ever strong enough so i climbed the ladder to the poppy. Very Ape is take on the media in general. The lyrics dance the same way the media dances with peoples lives dignity. Milk It is about Kurt Courtney. They feed off of each other they were each others muses. Its about 2 being 1. IsYour scent is still here in my place of recoverya reference to rehab? She was a major force behind In Utero. The album name came from one of her poems. Radio Friendly Unit Shifter. First named Nine Month Media Blackout is about L. Hirschbergs Vanity Fair story about The Globe printing a photo of a deformed baby, meant to be Frances Bean. The headline was Rock Stars Baby is Born a Junkie. All Apologies... The song that gets better NOT sadder every year. Is this Kurts apology for not being a better person? Erlewine is a perfect example of what Kurt meant in In Blooms chorus. This was edited from 10,000 words.

Did any of you read the review? The reviewer made this seem as if it was kurts suicide note. Bulllllllllcrap. Kurt did not try to shead his audience with this album. All he wanted to do was to make an album that he could listen to. He regreated making Nevermind (another great albulm) so sleek and mainstream. He could care less about his critics. He didnt write for them, he wrote for himself as an outlet of his emotions. In Utero was what he wanted from Nevermind. It was NOT a suicide not or anything close to that. In Utero is one of my favorite albums of all time and Nirvana is probably my all time favorite band.

First all of nirvana's albums rock. Bleach was a raw unrefined type of grunge. Nevermind was a radio freindly intro to grunge. And this album was what nirvana wanted to sound like. This album really made fans question if they were real Nirvana fans or people who liked pop and all the other stuff they heard on the radio. This album is pure Indie Rock, pure Grunge, and pure Hard Rock. There is a noticable difference between the songs on here that were ment for radio and the ones that weren't. But the group seemed to try as hard as they could to get their sound as much in those songs too. I wouldn't say this is the best or that any of the other ones were the best or worst. Each album had a different sound. But, this album is a combination of Bleach and Nevermind. This was a crapy review i know but it's hard not to be single minded. But don't listen to the critics. To put it simple, if you like melodies and radio stuff then don't expand past Nevermind. But if you're a die hard Nirvana fan or you like hard grunge rock, then you'll like the album.

i love in utero i actually listen to it more than nevermind because the lyrics are deeper and the songs are really good and they are a lot different from the songs on nevermind bcz on nevermind they wrote really poppy songs with dave just hitting the drums really hard and kurt on guitar just roaring and they experimented more

I love this album, although I like Nevermind more. I think the production could have been a bit better, though not as shiny as Nevermind. It took me a few listens to get my head around it, but I appreciate it now. The best songs are: Scentless Apprentice Heart Shaped Box Rape Me Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle Pennyroyal Tea All Apologies

nevermind is generally considered their best work, but i prefer this album. great songs, interesting production make for what the band saw (i think) as exactly what they wanted to do at the time. still sounds great over 10 years later, too.

Very Few Albums reach the gut wrenching emotion that In Utero reaches in just a few songs. Although there are some catchy out-right grunge songs(serve the servants) the album is much more deep than that of records from fellow grunge rockers The Melvins or Tad. Many could argue that this was Cobains Suicide note to the world which is understandable considering how much raw emotion is put into every song. In short In Utero is a rare album in the sense that its dark and emotional without being painful its flat out bleek bliss as the bands final record is not just a fun record but a masterpiece that will never have a substitution.

LETS FACE IT. THE VERY PEOPLE THAT KURT GREW UP HATING, EVERYONE IN THE MAINSTREAM, BECAME HIS MOST ARDENT SUPPORTERS. YOU HAD LIKE MTV "SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT" EVERY MINUTE OF EVERYDAY. ITS NO WONDER THE MAINSTREAM LOVED NIRVANA. THEY COULDNT GET ENOUGH NIRVANA. SO ALONG COMES "IN UTERO". "OH MAN, ITS GOING TO BE JUST LIKE NEVERMIND!!!". WROOOOOONG. THIS WAS A WHOLE NEW BREED OF NIRVANA. A RAW NIRVANA. A PURE NIRVANA. THIS WAS NIRVANA AS THEY INTENDED IT TO BE. THIS WAS HOW THINGS WERE SUPPOSED TO BE. THEY KNEW (OF COURSE KURT KNEW THIS MORE) THAT NEVERMIND DIDNT COME OUT THE WAY THEY WANTED IT TO. SO TO PISS PEOPLE OFF, TO DISAPPOINT THEM, HE "CLEANED" UP HIS ACT WITH "IN UTERO". HE PURPOSELY DROVE SOME "FANS" AWAY. "HEY, THIS ISN'T NEVERMIND, THIS @#$%S!!!" NEVERMIND WAS NIVRANA'S CALL TO THE WORLD, IN UTERO WAS THEIR ANGER TOWARDS IT. IT REMAINS THEIR DEEPEST, MOST INTRICATE WORK. NO DOUBT, THEIR BEST WORK EVER.

Posted: 1/14/2005A review of In Utero [Explicit Version] [Explicit] by Supremecy92
It is solidly agreed that Nirvana's greatest album is no other than "Nevermind." However the next runner up is undeniably "In Utero." It contains by far the most screaming of all of the Nirvana albums. It also contains a much "heavier" rocking style to it. There is also a secret track that starts 24 minutes after "All Apologies" begins. "Nevermind"may have opened new doors for the world, but "In Utero" held the power to express Kurt Cobain in ways of sadness that if he had expressed them in "Nevermind" the album would have been ruined. It also predicted his suicide on April 8th, 1994 through the gloomy mood of the album. The hoarse and desprate scream of "wait" in "Heart-Shaped Box." "Very Ape" expressed his veiws on how he felt his life was traveling from "out of the ground, into the sky, out of the sky" and "into the dirt." You could say that "In Utero" was a little motivation twoards the "metal" rock style as "Nevermind" was twoard rock in general. Altough the mood to the album over all is a depressing one, the secret track at the end sheads a beacon of light on the happiness of Kurt before his suicide as he enjoys goofing off with the band. This was the album that showed his emotions clearly, the skinless angel on the cover of the album, the feeling of infection in "Milk It." "In Utero" may stands in "Nevermind's" shadow, but it still speaks for Kurt Cobain's spirit very clearly.
