The beauty of such tracks as something I can never have, and the powerful angsty hit terrible lie, Its very apparent why Nine Inch Nails where one of the most iInfluential bands of the 1990s, With its angst filled lyrics it really makes you feel Trent Reznors mindset. And for the first time showed that a musician can truely know what it feels like to hurt. Making Pretty Hate Machine one of the most appealing albums ever made in recording history. The sound was unheard of and innovative, criticized by the music critics but held in a light by generation that held the Seattle music scene with such high regard. Trent Reznor is the voice of the 90s generation. Songs about love, lost love, betrayal, anger at God, humanity, and the world. Enough to make you start a revolution or maybe a religion? His music and his lyrics are trance like and still create such emotion.
A classic in itself, this is truly his masterpiece opus. Was this review helpful? What he did on this album helped to shape an entire genre of music. It is essential to every collection, and ranked as pioneers are.

But, it took quite awhile for this album to catch onto the mainstream crowd. But, once it did. There was no stopping it. The singles: "Head Like a Hole", "Sin" and "Down in it" all were pretty big on radio around 1991. "Head like a Hole" being the most played. This album is alot of fun compared to other efforts from Nine Inch Nails. It's fairly inconsistant in the tempo department. It can be fast and heavy one moment: As in "Terrible Lie". Then it can give you something heavy and down tempo: As in "Sin". It requires a couple listens to get used to. But, overall worth your time and effort. Was this review helpful? Reznor demonstrated his genious here, and only topped it when he released Downward Spiral. If you like this, get Downward Spiral. Was this review helpful? This is what I consider a perfect album. The machine-like beats mixed with Trent's raw emotions make for perfect contrast and an all time great album. Was this review helpful? I think it is the second best (Downward Spiral is the very best). This is a classic and it is well worth any metalhead's money. If you like NIN you should also check out Ministry. They are another kick ass industrial band. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1-13 of 13 Per Page |
