From song to song, you are taken on a journey that ascends and culminates beautifully. I have heard all of the albums, studio, live and acoustic, have been to all of the concerts and have seen every television appearance and I am still amazed at the talent and complexity that is John Mayer. On the strength of that single, I bought Heavier Things and Room for Squares. What struck me most about John Mayer was his ability to mix different styles, topics and instruments, all the while sounding strong and not forced. Continuum strays a little from the rock side and has more of a blues edge, and while it might strike you at first as outside of the John Mayer box, thats precisely what makes this album his finest work.
For a while I debated between Room for Squares and Heavier Things. Which album was better? Which did I like listening to more? The answer is easy now. Continuum is his best studio album and my favorite John Mayer. Waiting for the World to Change is a song for all those who feel like their voice isnt being heard. Vultures deals with people in your life who would love nothin more than to see you beaten down. All 12 songs are great, but my favorite is Slow Dancing In A Burning Room. It deals with a love that makes no sense to save, yet the two participants want to try and save the sinking ship. The guitar and hook work great together. John Mayer is one of my favorite artists and I hope he continues to deliver powerful, rich music in the future, particularly in a time when the radio gives us nothing but garbage. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1 out of 1 users found this helpful His work is really showing the signs of a maturing artist. He is switching between and mixing genres with his own twist and style... a rare talent to find today. His technical abilities let him make the music sparkle, but he still gets the emotion into it so that it connects with the listener at a deeper level as well. Lyrically he is getting it together too, issues and life get tackled with a smooth sound and up to date style. Lets see how he continues to use his talent and also to see how gracefully he moves on to his next projects. Does he have the heart and soul to become the Clapton of the Gen-X crowd? If your a guitar player then his appeal comes from his technical proficiency, and blues driven soul. But if you just like good music, then this is the CD for you. JM took some time off from studio work to do a live blues album which spawned TRY the blues heavy JM trio project . However he has slipped back into his rocker-hearthrob role with the greatest of ease. John Mayer has reached back into his bag of tricks and produced a most listenable album. CONTINUUM has his signature pop-rock-bluesman-at -heart thing, however this record has a notable maturity to it. Johns BUBBLE-GUM-TOUNGE has grown up. Mayer tackles deep subject matter, BELIEF deals with faith, regular and misguided. WAITING FOR THE WORLD TO CHANGE gets in-your-face political. VULTURES tells about people who use other people. All in all not to shabby for a guy born in Bridgeport, CT (also my home town) who is shaping up to have a great musical future. So be careful as you run through the halls of your high school to get this record. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1-7 of 7 Per Page |
