The involvement of Jeff Lynne, whose Beatle-flavoured Electric Light Orchestra had dominated the music scene in the 80s, and who had become acquainted, and good friends, through his helping with the music Harrison wrote and recorded for the Handmade Film Shanghai Surprise, starring Sean Penn and Madonna. ( They are seen in the movie performing Zig Zag, which was the B side of the single release of Got My Mind Set On You.) Jeff Lynnnes music and production style, and superior knowledge of music, made him a good counterpart to Sir George Martin. He not only co-produced, but co-wrote, and played on the LP. He would go on to become Harrisons record producer until, and after, the end of his life.
George appearing on the LP cover posing with his original Gretsch Duo Jet should have been an indication, and Beatle fans all over the world were in great anticipation, and were not, along with the rest of the music world, disappointed. Another harkening to The Beatles is Fish On The Sand, which includes the 12 string Rickenbacker, for which George made famous during the 1964 portion of Beatle history.
There is a song based on one of the Alcoholic Anonymous traditions. Musicians include Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton and Elton John. On the video for We Was Fab, Elton John can be seen passing George and putting a penny in his cup!
Got My Mind Set On You was written by Rudy Clark, who also wrote If You Gotta Make A Fool Of Somebody, a hit for James Ray. When the Beatles first came to the US, and Murray the K was playing Love Me Do, he commented that the harmonica was reminescent of James Ray. If You Gotta make A Fool of Somebody was part of The Beatles early stage repertoire. So alot of Beatle past is mined to produce this wonderful album of music by the only former Beatle to really maintain The Beatle sound. Was this review helpful? He has lost the desire to continue churning out an album a year and retired to his garden and other personal interests. By the time Cloud 9 came out, there was alot of nostalgia surrounding the music world but the ex-beatles had been quiet since the start of the decade. Little did they know Harrison was about to knock their socks of with one of the greatest comeback albums of all time!He re-worked I Got My Mind Set On You which shot straight up to #1 on 3 different charts at that time. It prooved that at 44 George was still hip and capable of producing a pop record that people would enjoy. The success was matched with the second single When We Was Fab with it's nostalgia and Beatles references caused a stir and was a hit. Devil's Radio was Harrison's response to the media and includes the line ";don't be a broadcaster";. The songs are all very catchy and make a great pop record that after the dissapointment of Gone Troppo no one expected.George was back and inspired to become more active with more appearances to follow including the Traveling Wilburys which is another story.Cloud 9 is an enjoyable album and the best solo beatle record of the 1980's backing up his All Things Must Pass which was the best solo beatle record of the 1970's.
