What other artist blends hip-hop beats, soul and jazz togetherto make their own signature style?? And for that matter, who can do it as smoothly as her?? This album is so catchworthy that is will be buzzing in your head all day long. Anyone with a wide variety of musical tastes, from Outkast to Steely Dan, is sure to enjoy this neo-soul nugget. She has both proven and assured the world, that women of African decent, are just as beautiful in there natural form...Love begins with one's self, and she has given voice to my thought's and views on life...It's in deed a pity, that there are so many people in the world who are not proud of the package they were blessed with, and who choose to enhace it with silicon and hair and nails made in Japan, and it took one individual to change a lot of minds has, as to how they should view themselves has a person...Keep on letting your beauty shine, in your whole being and your words my sister, the truth often hurts so preach it, the world is listening....You have a beautiful mind..Baglady Jamaica. Ms. Badu has truly claimed her throne as the most high queen of the Neo-soul movement. Her messages are so powerful and beautiful. Every young person should listen to this album until the message is understood. You are light, Ms. Badu, shine on...queen, shine on Was this review helpful? Assured songwriting, none I have heard yet from the other neo-soul darlings like Macy Gray and Alicia Keys, dominate this album, and it's production values are surprising in its scope and flawless in its execution. And her voice-much rawer and more commited than it was on Baduizm, comes from a place similar to the soul gods of yesteryear, Gaye, Aretha and Otis. Mama's Gun is a smoking gun, a modern classic. Then came "Tyrone," from her 1999 album "Live." Now "Silly E Badu", as she refers to herself in on the track "Cleva," is back with album number 3, "Mama's Gun," and it's her best to date. Starting off with the loud, hypnotic "Penitentiary Philosophy," "Mama's Gun" is an enjoyable ride, so to speak. There's not one bad song on here, although "AD 2000" is a bit slow compared to the rest of the album. Highlights include "Penitentiary Philosophy," "Didn't Cha Know" (which was nominated for a 2002 Grammy), "...& On", and the stunning "Kiss Me On My Neck (Hesi)." The album closer is the beautiful (but lengthy) "Green Eyes", which runs a little over 10 minutes, and comes in three 'movements.' However, one of the tracks that is listed in the lyric book, "Props To The Lonely People," doesn't appear on the album. All in all, it's Badu's best work to date, and one of 2000's best albums. **This album is number 6 in this reviewers Top Ten albums.** Was this review helpful? Erykah Badu shed her previous conceit from "Baduizm" and came out with an album that was raw and creative. I can't understand why Destiny's Child was nominated for a Grammy for "Survivor", and "Mama's Gun" was completely overlooked in the best female R&B album division. I don't think they even belong in the same category! Was this review helpful? Sign In 1-9 of 9 Per Page |
