Allen Tousainnt knows where his bread is buttered but the style in which he plays is so rich and vibrant, so multifacited, that there is need to fear of him becoming stagnant or repetitive in his art. Both are often underrated, both are the preeminant elder statesmen of thier styles.
Tousainnt and Costello end up melding in a way that isnt so unlike the Beatles Lennon-McCartney dynamic. Costello is acidic, visceral, deeply intellectual, and ironic. Tousainnt is more gentlemanly, elegant, refined, and in a very mature way sometimes sweet and sweetly sensual. Together, thier songs come together to form a very realistic emotional picture.
In the end, this album is like Costellos 1998 collaboration with Burt Bacharach, except the style this time the music iis more eclectic, the lyrics more varied in content, and the result just flat out better. And I consider Painted From Memory one of my favorite albums. Should win multiple Grammys. Was this review helpful? Sign In 1-1 of 1 Per Page |
